I know this a very old thread on the HMH TRV but I wondering since I might purchase one, of the vise owners who posted here in the past.....are you still using the vise and if so what has been you long term opinion on the vise?

    Thank you.

    Terry

Hi Terry - I have had my TRV since 2019 and have tied somewhere around a thousand flies on it.  It's the only vise I own and it's not likely that I will ever buy another.  The only discernable wear in that time has been to the gun bluing on the jaws and that is very minor.  Other than 2 Teflon washers and a bushing the entire vise is made out of tool steel, stainless steel or brass.  No plastic or aluminum.  All of the set screws are steel or brass.   I can't even imagine how any part on it could fail with normal use.   Perhaps the Teflon washers used to control the drag of the rotation will one day wear? (I don't know) but they are very simple to change and replacements can be found at any hardware store for less than a buck.  I tie trout flies from size 2 down to 22 and have had no issues with the hook holding ability of my vise.

This has led to the discovery of materials that apparently I have ordered more than once or twice.

I'm a very organized person by nature.  My tying desk is kept neat and clear with everything in its place.  My materials are well organized. And yet I STILL come home with duplicated  materials.  I noticed yesterday that I have 3 brown hen necks, they're not identical, one is almost brown and the other two are sort of brown and kind of brown.

Now I put notes in my phone that say things like "don't buy any more damn brown hen necks" or "Cleveland will win the Super Bowl before you run out of natural turkey tail".  A must read in the fly shop parking lot as my memory clearly can't be trusted.

One other small point about material swaps... Hardly any freshwater tyer would ever even look at most of the materials I find essential as a saltwater guy (and years ago trying to explain my needs to this or that supplier -when everything they had was meant for freshwater... a bit frustrating...  Nowadays there's lots of great materials for someone with my affliction - but that wasn't the case years ago at all..

    Good point sir-

I only ran it an hour or so.  I figure a butterfly can start a hurricane, an hour with a shop fan should be able to warm the entire Northern U.S.  You should start feeling it in a week or so.

A week!  But the weather girls are saying we're getting a foot of heavy wet stuff overnight and through tomorrow-

A little off topic, but silicone spraying your discharge chute to the top of the thrower works much better for packy clumpy dense snow. Mine is now 21 years old and I live in the Hill towns where we get dumped on every year. I also have a spare set of belts for mine just in case. One can will last for years. It won't perform miracles like never getting plugged when doing the very end of the driveway where the snow is just mostly slush, but you should see a big difference. They even make stuff specifically for it like "Snow-Jet"  that I'm using for the first time this season. So far, it's every bit as good as the silicone spray worked.

    Regards,

                        Mark

Thank you for that tip Mark- I wasn't aware of it and will definitely try it.

Nice DF - get much snow out your way?

We ended up with about 6" BUT it was the really heavy wet stuff.  My 19 year old Troy Built blower just couldn't handle the strain and gave out.  It probably needs a belt along with a few other things.  I've been having to fix more and more issues with it each year. I'm trying to decide if I want to bother repairing it or buy a new Ariens for next year.

Yes sir - that's them.  They're a good size for holding hooks!

I saw the Starlink train @ 2 weeks ago, that was pretty cool. Thanks for the heads-up.

That freaked me right out the first time I saw it. Didn’t know anything about it and thought the Martians or Russians were doing a fly-by.

Venus and Jupiter look pretty good right now but thanks for the heads up about the conjunction. Can’t wait to take a look at it.

2 weeks ago I was walking our dogs just after dark in the fields behind our home when Starlink went over.  As I don't allow the news media into my life anymore I had no idea what I was looking at.  I don't mind saying that for a few minutes I understood clearly how someone who sees a UFO or a sasquatch feels.  I called my wife who was home 500' away and she said  "I told you not to drink bourbon if you start with wine" -  Some coaxing got her out on the deck and she caught the tail disappearing.  Thankfully a quick internet search cleared it up and we didn't waste any tinfoil making hats.   Still a town cop said there were many phone calls to the station that night so apparently I'm not the only one not tuning in to the news media these days?  This website will let you know when there passing over your area.  https://findstarlink.com/

  9. Our local Tree had markers for coloring scratches in wood.  For a buck (at the time) I grabbed all the colors, brown, almost brown, light brown and sort of brown.  The colors are great for coloring shell backs and such.  They also had some storage boxes even smaller than the ones you show that are perfect for storing hooks.  Every now and again they have LED desk lamps.  Not the greatest but they're only a buck.

Thanks! Yep, the handles on the first two are spalted Maple. (The greenish light is just poor lighting in the shop lol). African Teak for the hoops on those. The second one has a Maple burl handle, with a hoop of curly Maple, Cherry, and Niove.

    Gorgeous sir!

Do you fish any of these Bergman flies?

I can't speak for Norm - but fishing the Berman's I tie or any winged wet is a passion of mine George.  Maybe my favorite way to fish because I love tying them? Winged wets caught fish a 100 years ago and they still catch fish today.   An angler just needs to learn the correct way to present them- there are times when they will out fish nymphs.  There is a great video on Amazon Prime called "Wet Fly Ways" where Davy Wotton explains in detail the traditional way to fish winged wets.  Including upstream and quartering upstream techniques.  The only issue with them is that the wings are fragile and don't last long in battle.  Fortunately were all fly tyers and we can always tie make more.  Just part of the fun!

George I suspect as a seasoned fly angler you probably are very familiar with winged wet techniques.  My note is for those looking for "how to" info.
