  1. I get that, my problem is the pattern calls for gray hackle. Google hungarian partridge hackle only the colors brown, natural, black, and olive are listed. I guess gry and natural the same thing, I am new to fly tying. Tightlines
  2. I interested in tying both the dry fly and bedhead size14. My question is the pattern calls for grey partridge hackle. I find only natural, brown, black and yellow. Would natural be considered a good choice. Tightline

  6. These are all great tips, I just think at times it's sad I waited so long to get involved in this hobby, I really enjoy it, and it's so satisfying. If only my hands where steadier. I do have I purchase a desk lamp for sure, no matter how much natural light I have it's not enough, lol blind as a bat, hope the trout are too when say look at my flys. Tightlines
  7. Now that is something I have to try. I have to purchase a couple things, that pliers he's using is one of them, I have learned the whip finish, lol I don't know why I couldn't do that before it's so easy, but I must say using half hitch first to lock in your thread first I a great idea. When I was a wee Ladd in the early 70s my grandfather made his own fly rods and all his flys from herter, he tried often to get me involved, was to interested in sports, now I wish I took the time. Its a very satisfying hobby. Thank you so much Tightlines
  8. Added photos again, I'm presently in an area with little to no signal
  9. I don't have stand for lighting or a camera stand. It is what it is. Tightlines
  10. Size 6 hook I didn't have black/brown chenille so I took black and brown then twisted them together. I tried to get as much light as I could. Criticism welcome Tightlines

  13. Lol I never even thought about spit. Will definitely try it. Just had trouble keeping the dubbing rapped around the thread and staying. Tightlines
  14. Thank you everyone for the encouragement and tips, they are very useful. Yes I will be somewhere on 395 fishing from Bridgeport to coleville, then lake topaz. From mid March to October I make flys as needed, I will post some tonight. I will be practicing whip finishing on a bare hook this evening, wish me luck. Tightlines
  15. When tying a fly using dubbing to develop a thorax do you use waxed thread or wax that you place on the thread itself? I tried using a non waxed thread but not working very well. All answers would be appreciated. Tightlines
  16. Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I entered this hobby on a budget to save on the cost of buying flys. My next investment will be magnifiers, smaller then a 14 is to much to see, I use mostly size 10 to 12. The orvis premium kit was recommended and has everything you need to get started. I'm really enjoying myself, heading to the eastern sierras in california in @2weeks. Looking forward to using my self made flys to fish the walker river. Tightlines
  17. Have a few years fly fishing using older gear, heddon glass/martin reels. Recently picked up on the art of tying my own flys, just gets hard when your an older man looking at a size 16 hook or smaller and can't see s***. I love it. Best part is catching fish with fly you ty yourself. Still working on that, whip finishing is the worst, I about tied my finger to the fly twice and broke the thread countless times. Never give up!
  18. I have fly fished for years but never tied my own flys until now, my wife gifted me an orvis premium kit for my birthday. Please let me know what you think, I will be fishing these soon. The hardest part for me is the whip finish. Broke thread twice and I believe I used to head cement. Best picture I can do on a cellphone.
