    trout traveler Flies arrived today.
  2. A thin fuzzy line seems to work best for me. That way you don't have large globs here and there and you can set the body taper by the line width and not the dubbing that isn't wound on tight. I started out with wax but it really isn't needed. Most of the time the dubbing will wind just fine with thread. Another option would be to touch your forhead or side of your nose (not the inside) that'll give you a tiny bit of natural oil to help get you started and spin. I usually start just below the hook, spin on a thin bunch and work my way down a couple inches. Wrap that on and add more as needed.
  3. Maybe he should keep it to himself then. How did you learn to speak? Someone taught you, should they be upset that you speak every day and possibly even use your ability to speak to make money? Patents on flies is about as ass backwards as patents on software. For that matter, patents, being a relatively new thing in history are suppost to protect the inventor. Look at the software / computer industry of late, what inventor can you think of has millions of dollars to take on some of the big players out there? So what they guy ties a fly, charges a price for his labor. How many flies did the guy that showed him copy from someone else? For that matter, how may flies do YOU tie that someone else created? If you want check out some of these companies to see how patent laws apply microsoft blackberry sco And this is just recent news. ... If you didn't get the hint I despise patent law. Not the theory behind it just the way it works. When someone makes something "NEW" they should be protected but companies claming patents on other companies work or patenting thing that should never have a patent on them just make a mockery of the entire system. At any rate, ummm good luck smallie!

    Are you a geek?

By trade I'm an IT person so I see my fair share of geeks. I think I of all people would know since I work side by side at times with these strange creatures. At any rate I feel like I am being categorized as a "geek" due to my profession as an IT person and my small collection of computers at home that I often configure with differnt operating systems and applications. To me a geek is person who never sees the light of day, bathes once a month or less and speaks in binary 24/7. Yes I am skilled at hooking you up, fixing your internet, telling you those obscure commands to make your poorly written windows programs follow your command but even so that will not, will never ever, put me in the poor socially skilled group called geeks!... I've attached a picture of myself and my computer cluster as proof...

    WOHOO!!!!

Data center managment whoo. Now that is a nice job... Well, if you have people under you to tell what to do it is. lol
  7. Haven't seen em.. when did you mail them out?
  8. Yeah Joe, I update the first post as flies arrive. Nice tie btw.
  9. I'll let you know when they arrive.
  10. Very nice setup. Once the kids get a little older that is along the lines I was thinking. Something I can use and tuck away.
  11. Never heard of the fail your way to success? Or how about if you won't do anything poorly you will never do anything well? After three years I think I can honestly say my dry flies now float! My advice, for all it is worth, start with that woolly bugger in your tying book and do it over and over, and over, and over, and over until it looks like the woolly bugger in the book. Then the next one will most likely be the gold ribbed hares ear. Do the same thing. Those are two great flies that will get you catching fish from there you'll also be hooked and move on to dries, wets, or maybe even full dressed salmon flies some day. Good luck.
  12. Now is my chance to surpass OLB's post count! :yahoo:

Waiting on 3 more. They have plenty of time if they need it but if all of them arrive before the due date I'll send them out.
  14. I'd like to see an apples to apples contest like conehead mentioned where you tie a set pattern with set material. Maybe an advanced but standard pattern like a humpy or a nice wet fly like a Blae and Black. Something where you can compare the person tying the flies vs the pattern chosen. Another option would be your own version of say an Elk Hair Caddis or some other fly. I think that it would be a good idea to combine sections that do not recieve a lot of flies as well. Maybe give an option of say panfish with a second option of streamer/top/nymph if there are enough participants. I know the panfish section wasn't as full as some of the others. At any rate, I think you did a great job on the whole thing and I enjoyed it, even the surprise twist at the end.
  15. Touch my kids and the last thing you'll see is the wrong end of a semi automatic no matter how many years I serve. Temporary Instanity.. honest!
  16. It just so happens I'm tying egg flies up for next month tonight.
  17. You know conehead? You're just asking for trouble telling us that. Welcome to the forums RC!
  18. Steelie Nice tie but I wanted to make some suggestions. The collar is to high. Maybe use less thread next time. I would also suggest a bit more color, the black looks great if you are going for the a cat burgler tie but if you want to catch fish I'd throw a flew splashes of red or blue in. mcfly
  19. I'd like to extend my thanks as well. Not only do they sponsor this great site they also supported the fly tier of the year contets. Thanks a ton Marty
  20. Thanks out to Will and JStockard for making FTF one of the premier fly tying sites on the web.
  21. mozes, You have to draw the line somewhere with items you carry on stream and a tripod is where I draw the line. I mean really there just isn't enough room in my vest next to the kitchen sink. I think a photo forum would be great. It gets tossed around enough in the other forums and with outdoor, fly, fish, and bugs we try to take pictures of I bet it would do well.
  22. Great job Smallie. I don't care what Steeldrifter says about you you're alright in my book!..
  23. I'd be really interested in a how to on taking a picture of 10+lb fish while holding the fish and the camera while trying to fit yourself in the picture and not drop your non-waterproof camera into hid deep water.
