winter patterns

Recommended Posts

Never fished the rocky mountains, but I know that PT nymphs, zug bugs, Copper johns are good go-to patterns for winter. Never gone wrong with a PT nymph.

Hope this helps.

Was winter fishing last week on the Bitterroot in Montana.

Used a heavily weighted Large Prince Nymph and a San Juan Worm with a bead (middle, for weight). Get it down fast and deep.

Caught two fish in an hour at 30 degrees F on the San Juan Worm.

If its warm enough I would suspect that the afternoon may produce some emerging BWO's (Size: Small)

Also, SmallieFanatic is right on!

Hope that helps. Rip Lips!

Over here on the east coast, we rely on small stone fly nymphs this time of the year in big rivers.

Size 14-16, all black or black/copper.
