bigfoot 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2012 I would like to learn how to tie a mylar minnow using the mylar tubing. Does anybody know of a dvd that teaches how to tie the minnow? Any help would be great and thanks. BF

Bugsy 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2012 I'm guessing you mean Hal Janssen's Minnow? Sometimes people call it a mylar minnow or epoxy minnow. No video/dvd showed up online, but there aren't many steps. 1. Using adhesive lead tape ("zonker tape"), form an underbody on hook shank. 2. Secure a short tuft of marabou to represent tail. 3. Slip a precut length of silver, gold or pearl mylar tubing to shank. A short section of thread wraps will ramp up the body at both the head and tail. Tie off. 4. Coat tubing with your choice of epoxy. This may also be a useful application for one of the UV resins on the market. 5. When first coat of epoxy is dry (or UV resin is cured), paint the body as desired. 6. When paint is dry, overcoat with second coat of epoxy or resin. The are books that list the pattern guides, but you can search online for them as well.
perchjerker 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2012 If you mean Charlie Cypert's Mylar Minnow, it is tied as follows: 1) Attach bead-chain eyes to hook; 2) Tie in Chenille, color of choice, at hook bend; 3) Make two loops of chenille from bend and around eye on far side of hook, and repeat on near side; 4) Tie off chenille, but DO NOT cut thread; 5) Cut piece of Mylar tubing, of preferred size,to 3 X hook shank length; 6) Double mylar tubing in half, and insert dubbing needle through at mid-point; 7) push hook eye through opening created by dubbing needle; 8) Pull ends of mylar back to hook bend and tie off with thread; 9) Whip finish; and, 10) Fray (separate) excess mylar strands to create tail. Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2012 Here is another one. I posted SBS photos/directions here: http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=61483&st=0&p=476792&hl=+turkey%20+quill%20+minnow&fromsearch=1entry476792 Kirk
Peterjay 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2012 You could also do a search for Page Rogers' "slim jim." It's a floater, similar to the flies Kirk posted. Page claims to have "developed" it, but she's CLAIMED to have invented a lot of things, including Lefty's big-eye deceivers. Regardless, it's a decent fly, and the SBS is probably the same as Kirk's.
