Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

A quick introduction before I get to the important stuff....

I live in Western NC and have fished the streams and rivers of the NC mountains as well as Eastern Tenn. for the last thirty years, and that's pretty much the extent of my travel's with the fly rod.

The wife and I are planning a trip to fish MT in July, I've read about the Slide Inn located in Cameron and am hoping to obtain some helpful info on making the trip a success. I don't plan to use a guide, hopefully I can take my current level of experience combined with what I can learn in the next five months and catch lots of big fish....I couldn't help but to add that "big" stuff in there.

I've been fortunate to have bow hunted in 11 states, I know what to plan, what to pack and what equipment I'll need to have a successful trip. However I'm in the dark on traveling across the country hoping to catch fish in foriegn waters.

Equipment: Winston Boron 8.5' 4 wt, I'm running a 5wt wf SA GPX line on a Ross Evolution.

Orvis Western 2, 8.5' and a Silver Label 7.5' 3wt. (I'll take all three but plan to fish the Winston).

Any advice on fishing the Madison as well as info on the Slide Inn will be greatly appreciated, I would like to talk with someone who has visited the Slide Inn if possible.

No expert, but I have been to the Slide Inn and fished the Madison. First off, I'd bring a heavier rod. Because of the wind, size of the trout and size of some of the streamer and rigs, I would use at least a 6 wt. As for flies, I like the serendipity, zebra midge, elk hair caddis, hoppers, and streamers of various colors and sizes.

For the best advice, call the Slide Inn or Beartooth Fly Fishing. They are both great people.

Second giving the Slide Inn a call, talk to Kelly Galloup usually very helpful.

Rods I would go with 5 and 6wt unless you plan on finding some smaller streams. You will find that western rivers are generally bigger, faster and more exposed to the wind than the rivers in NC and E.TN.
