add147 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 Hello, Can someone please tell me what type of action I should consider on my first build. I will be fishing for warm water fish like bass, crappie, and blue gill.

COMike 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 If you are used to fishing with Lures (rattle traps, spinner baits, Jig 'n' pigs, etc) you should concentrate on TOP water plugs in the AM...... I will tell you to talk to "Mike Chell" He is in your region and is a great guy for fishing what you want to do!!!!\\

mikechell 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2014 Doesn't matter, Add. There are plenty of builders on this site. For the fish you mention, I'd recommend a 5 weight rod, for the first one. Light enough to have fun with small bluegill, stout enough to handle any large mouth short of a record. Thanks for the reference, COMike. Much appreciated. djtrout 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2014 My first bass rod, and still my best, was an 8 weight fast action. Many if not most folks would disagree. However, it throws larger and heavier flies like a dream. Good for Pike/Musky too. Thing is, some of my more heavily dressed feather flies float through the air like a helicopter, and I've tried throwing with a 7 weight medium action and it just doesn't do the job. To use the 7 wt, which I do use often, my fly selection is more limited. I have a couple of 4 inch bait fish patterns on heavy salt water hooks, 1/0; the 8 wt does beautifully on these. I just think 8 weight is the most versatile warm water rod going. It does fine on bluegills as well. You ask about action, though - I say fast action only because I think you get better kick on larger and bushy flies.
