  1. When you daughters watching Sesame Street and the first thought that pops into mind when you see big bird is "man I'd like to pluck that big boy "...just don't get caught saying it out loud, it tends to get a weird look from your wife.
  2. I have been looking at some detached bodies like that one and was liking them. I might start with a few of those. Great stuff so far guys keeper coming!
  3. Looking for some caddis pupa patterns? I don't really have any I'm happy with and want to get some tied up. So what's your go to?
  4. yes that's exactly what I was referring to. Did not have that on my non rotary
  5. Yea I definetly prefer using a finer thread on drys
  6. Now that I've owned the peak rotary for a few weeks I highly recommend
  7. I received my peak vise in the mail about two weeks ago and have since tied a few dozen flys off of it. I got the pedestal model from j stockard that came with a material clip and the d arm for the rotary arm. All I can say is rock solid. Love just about everything about this vise. It's hook holding ability is great. I have only put size six through size 22 in it and no slippage at all. Really easy to adjust for different hook sizes. The rotary function is awesome and easy to use. The vise does everything that I need it too. I am extremely impressed. The only issue I have is I feel a little crowded when tying in a tail. The space to work is tight in that area. Other than that I would recommend it to any one. And oh by the way I got an American made rotary vise that is built like a rock, with add ons for 160...shipped.
  8. Lol I like the way he does it as well. But I just got good at doing it the other way!
  9. I have used sallies pretty much from the beginning. It just soaks right into the wraps and that's what I like. I either use the brush that comes with it or I use a little dropper bottle. Not sure the correct name for it.
  10. Hey I knew I wasn't the only one getting up early to sneak in a few hours of tying time! I have a 1 year old and my wife works 2nd shift so I get up at 5 every morning for some coffee, fly tying, and to browse the forums. " my time"
  11. With the exception of a few books and websites I practically credit you tube for teaching me how to tie flies. One of my most watched tiers is davie mcphail. Love his videos and style of tying. On a lot of his dryfly patterns when he ties off his hackle a lot of times he takes a few wraps around the hackle feather, then pulls everything back( any stray barbs and the waste piece to the hackle) takes a few wraps then wip finishes. I like this a lot as I assume it adds a decent amount of durability and looks nice when finished. Do you guys utilize this technique when tying? I notice some times davie doesn't do this and snips off his waste piece. What method do you prefer when tying and why?
  12. I have no experience with the pack that you mention but I have been very pleased with a multi pack that i Just recently purchased. It is saddle hackles that i bought through cabelas. they are similar to the whiting 100 packs except you can get them in multiple colors. I think they are listed as a value pack on cabelas website. What you get is keough saddle feathers . two each of dun black brown cream and grizzly. Each feather ties about 6 flies. Sizes 14 to 16. I think they are on sale right now for under twenty dollars.
  13. I've been working a little bit with z lon and antron lately. I've been tying a lot standard hackled dry flies but using z lon or antron for the " tail" and wings. My question is when I use this product for wings do you guys typically just tie in, cut to length, and leave undivided or do you take the time to divide the wings? I'm sure it's probably a matter of preference but is there any real draw back to either way? I have even posted the undivided wing a little to group the fibers..always fun experimenting. How do you guys do it?
  14. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=a3z5KoKbgq4&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Da3z5KoKbgq4 I was referencing this video sand fly
  15. One of the things that I like on the "improved" sparkle duns is the facts that they incorporate a thread Abdomen rather than a dubbed one. I like the way the transition looks into the dubbed thorax. What are your thoughts on a thread vs dubbed abdomen on sparkle duns and dry flys as a whole. What are the pros and cons of each style?
  16. I was wondering what colors are used for trailing shucks? And more importantly how do you pick out the color. I want to buy some antron or z Lon but not sure what to get with the complexity of all the colors they offer!
  17. Good advice that's how I have been taught to do it. Looking at it again It is bound down pretty good. I just felt like the tag end might get ripped out with a trout munching on it. I guess I am used to binding things down and covering them with thread.
  18. I was curious if there is anything you guys or gals do when you tie off your hackle with wire after palmering the EHC. I worry a little that the hackle might come out when a fish takes it and partially come un wound. maybe iI'm over worrying. Does anyone have problems with this happening?
  19. Looks great! I tried a stimulator when I first started tying and man did they come out ugly!... I guess the time has come to retry now that I've got some experience under my belt and a little better technique. Love stimulators for Brooke's.
  20. Love the simplicity. Might have to tie a few up
