  1. My flies are in the mail! As luck would have it, the new issue of Fly Tyer arrived today (was waiting when I returned from the post office!) I'd like to see someone try the frog on the cover (obviously not for the swap - just an impressive fly.)
  2. I thought I already posted here, but it doesn't seem to be showing up... Most likely user error. In any case, great flies everyone, can't wait to get them wet! Extra thanks to GPD for organizing. Thanks!
  3. Thanks Piker. I gave the quill body a coat of sally Hansen. Also, the tails have a very light coat of head cement coating the fibets. I had a few tips from this forum on ways to improve the proportions and will have an improved version in the August version of this thread!
  4. Thank you to each of you for responding. The suggestions are incredibly helpful. I'm going to take a few more shots at it and when I have something tat is an improvement I'll post. One of the things I'm really struggling with is getting decent wings. The dry hackle seems to thin in the tip. Do thin wing tips make a difference?
  5. Goldenflies- I'm curious, any findings on this product? I currently use the homemade naphtha / wax combo to per- treat flies but would be interested tower if this stuff works well. Thanks!
  6. Here are a few shots of a Sulphur Dry, Size 16 with a quill body. I'm interested in feedback as I'm still trying to get the hand of this tying stuff. Amazing how bad one's flies look when you put them under the macro lens! I trapped a bunch of hackle when tying things off so it crowded the eye and I think the hackle is a little big, but what do you think? Thanks! 7. First fly I've felt was decent enough to share publicly. Still learning here, but here is a Sulphur Dry - Size #16.
  8. Appreciate the tip. Checked the full Minuteman Library network which is the library network for the greater Boston area. No luck. Still looking for a reasonable cost method of reading "presentation" but at least I have a few others to read in the meantime!
  9. Thanks! Ordered from Alibris. Great site. Picked up a few other titles recommended here. I really appreciate the tips!
  10. I've been told that reading "Caddisflies" by LaFontaine and "Presentation" by Borger will prove immensely valuable in my continued effort to become a better fly fisherman / tyer. However, both of these books are over $150 anywhere I've seen and they aren't carried by my regional library network. Is there any reasonable way to get these books? I'm not looking for collectibles but books I can put to their proper use for reading and don't have $300 to spend for reading materials. Thanks!
  11. I'm curious - if you are seeing certain size dun on the water, would you expect the nymphs and emergers are the same size? For example, water I'm fishing has a size 18 Sulphur Dun in the evening. Figuring that tying up some nymph and emergers is in order to supplement the Duns. Should I be tying size 18 nymphs and emergers or something larger? Expanding - does this size consistency vary by insect? For example, does a size 12 Caddis larva produce as size 12 Caddis adult? Thanks!
  12. Chile trout was from Rio Simpson. My wife I went down there a few months ago and caught a spectacular end of season set of days. Fished a variety of rivers in the Coyhaique region and stayed at a great lodge. I couldn't recommend a better trip!
  13. Here is my favorite so far for the year (maybe all time?) A nice brown from Chile!
  14. Figured folks here might enjoy this photo from a recent weekend trip to NH. Unfortunately, the weather was terrible so little action on the surface. However, I was pleased with the similarities between my Yellow Sally and the natural! I've been tying since last October, so I probably get more of a kick out of this than you folks with more experience...
  15. I'll second that it is a nice article in Fly Fisherman. The diagrams in particular very nice. Written by Charlie Craven. Not new information, but nicely laid out. To many of the points above, the article mentions how maintaining proportions are probably more important to the fisherman than the fish (with the possible exception of traditional dries where the proportions can impact presentation.)
  16. I'll join if you'll have me. Thanks.
  17. Flies are ready... GPD4 can you PM me the mailing address? I think your inbox was full as it wouldn't let me send you a message. Thanks!
  18. I'll join if you'll have me! This would be my first swap. I was thinking of tying a #12 Iso Parachute, unless there are other requests!
  19. I am a Navy veteran (Annapolis '95) with six and three year old sons. The notes in this thread are touching and a real tribute to the character of this country. While I fear what the future my hold for my sons, I take great pride in the support and admiration this country holds for it's veterans. The pride and support described in this thread Serve for a great example should any of my children elect to serve their country. I wish each of you and all our service members the absolute best fortune.
