With cravens book (hares ear, PT, rs2, prince and copper), YouTube (McPhail's stuff ), and of course this site (trout bane) I've got a box full a keepers already and I'm only two months in. If I can pump out 2000 more flys a week an sell em at $5 a pop I might break even on all the !$&&x* IVE BOUGHT SINCE XMAS!!

Took a break from the book and made an attempt at some McPhail emergers off YouTube. Forgot to wrap back on one of those wing cases and had a lot of wraps showing. When I was finished cryin I took a purple marker (thought I grabbed brown ) and "fixed" it.

This was the 4th pattern I learned using Cravins "Basic Fly Tying" and my first time using ccg.

I was just playin w/ wing cases today too. I tried showing some red flash up through a black PT nymphs wing case but it wasn't workin out so I just went right over case and bead with it. I call him, "head trauma". With the other PT I teased the peacock up through the case between the fibers. That one looks really neat in the light, almost like something struggling to get out, but I doubt the pic will show it. I'm brand new at this and those are PT's no. 12 & 14 for me.

Stay away from the cheap floro if your gonna go that route. I picked up a spool of 2lbs berkley thinking I got deal of the century only to toss it and replace it with rio after one day dealing with it. I dont know whats different but the cheap stuff curls up, coils and becomes unusable for no reason. Run a length of that 2lbs berkley over your fingernail and watch what happens. I like floro for its stiffness. I can toss around a trio of nymphs all day and nary a tangle. if I do get em wrapped up the stiffness inherent to floro goes a long long way toward saving a rig and keeping me fishing instead of rigging. Cost is a real drag though and your favorite knots are out the window. Even with the proper knots an over eager hook set will snap you off every time.
