  1. I posted this here since this is a newbie question. I've always tied using $30 vises from Cabela's, and I'm new to using a rotary vise. Does anyone know of a good place to get some training materials to learn the ins and outs? Thanks! Frank
  2. I'm feeling a bit leery about buying materials off eBay, so if anyone has a good seller/store they can recommend, I'd appreciate it . Frank
  3. Thanks for your help on this guys, especially the Hatches Magazine vise review. I'll let you guys know what I pick out :dunno:
  4. Ray, Since you're obviously happy with your Nor-Vise, and I'm starting to lean that way for a new vise, do you think I could just buy the video for it first before making a choice? EDIT: To add on that, does anyone have experience with the Dubbing Brush Table? EDIT 2: I'm down to a Nor-Vise or an Anvil Atlas. Someone help!!!
  5. Man, the two things I can think of that make me go "WTF was a I thinking?" are a complete mule deer hide, and a complete elk hide. After going through the trouble of drying the damned things, I have more deer/elk hair than I think I could ever use. I mean, it's sometimes convenient for those crazy patterns you dig up sometimes: "Using clippings of hair from over the LEFT knee joint of the deer...", but someday, when I'm 80, I think I'll leave the remaining 3/4ths of the hides I haven't used yet to my kids. Maybe they'll know what to do with it. That and the 3,000 yards of chenille I'll still have.
  6. Man, I knew it. I knew reading this post would start the ol' debit card on fire in my wallet! After some of those awe-inspiring tying stations, it's gonna be rough to go home to the much-used, government-issued random desk I have in our spare room. I move bases in about a year, so I really don't want to set up something too permanent, but once I finally settle down somewhere (please oh please Elmendorf, Alaska!), this thread will be my inspiration to build the ULTIMATE TYING STATION!
  7. My Zonkers are ready Please PM the address.
  8. I'm in with a Grey Zonker! :headbang:
  9. I put this out there because swaps get filled up so fast!
  10. I'm new, and stationed in Portugal, or I'd attempt this one . A veteran want to take this?
  11. Being from Eastern Oregon, when it comes to stillwater, one of my favorite patterns is the Olive Willy. Originally tied by Bob Bates, if you're from the Northwest, you've heard of this fly. The steps to tie is are available here: Olive Willy And hey, this is just me, but I think this thread calls for a fly swap!
  12. Does anyone know of a good place to buy the pre-mixed Kaufmann's dubbing for their stonefly nymphs? I'm a color-blind tier (which believe me, presents whole new challenges in itself), and I really don't want to have my wife walk me through mixing claret, red, orange, rust, black, brown, blue, and purple Angora together. She teases me enough as it is Thanks! Frank
  13. Well, there are a few tried-and-true methods used by tiers world-wide: Throwing yourself around the house and weeping uncontrollably. :crying: Mentioning materials whenever the subject of money comes up until she gives in (i.e. her-"Wow, $40 for a tank of gas, that's so expensive. you-"And just think, I could get 2 or 3 decent grade Whiting hackle necks for that price!") Sudden, unexplainable malfunction of her car/computer/hair dryer. Bringing home items of roadkill for fly tying use until the smell drives her insane. Flat-out telling her what you're going to buy (ensure all firearms in the house have their firing pins removed).
  14. I've bought Cabela's products in the past, so I hope they haven't changed their policy on APO/FPO shipments. :wallbash: As for J. Stockard, I emailed them today, and now I'm just hoping for a positive reply back. Thanks for all your suggestions! EDIT: Heh, I guess I deserve that "Bait Fisherman" title over there to the left, because otherwise I would have clicked on the J. Stockard "Shipping" tab, and read that yes, they do ship APO.
  15. Hey guys, I know there's a post about this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it at the moment. Any tips on the best place to buy bulk tying supplies? During my last base move (Misawa Japan to Azores Islands, Portugal), I packed up all my hackle and hair into large plastic containers and had them boxed up. Well, during the move the boxes got knocked around a bit, and both containers came open. After sitting in a warehouse for 20 days or so, pretty much every natural material I owned collected a fair amount of pests. So after convincing my wife that my life was pretty much over without fly-tying, I decided it's time to replace the whole bit. I know some people had mentioned eBay, so if you can tell me about shops you've had good experiences with, I'll look em up. I've also used Cabela's in the past (tad costly on some items, but they ship overseas), and a few other stores. So please, suggest away. :help: Frank EDIT: New to this site, and it rocks!
  16. Man, yet another mikostanev pattern to bleed my fingers as I try and master it. Keep em coming!
