It just has an underbody of dental tape, and then is cross stitch thread tied in the overhand weave or granny weave, depending on how you call it. It's the same weave that has been used in the "Woven Hex Nymph" in the Hatches Magazine and other patterns.

I see, thanks(!!) for the reference, I'll have to check it out. Loved ALL the flies, but yours was one of those that made me stand up and go search for better lighting. Great stuff.
