RandallW20 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2007 Hello all, I'm new to posting on this forum because I don't find all that much time to tie. Anyhow, I've been going through some Cabelas/Bass Pro catalogs and looking at lure patterns on conventional tackle to get some ideas on what designs to make. I'm using permanant markers and coloring different designes on the hard bodied pencil poppers. Well, I've fun out of ideas, I have made alot of patterns from fresh to salt water. What I'm asking is for people to post pics of their designs which will hopefully inspire me to come up w/ new designs (and maybe copy some too ). Thank You! Philly 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2007 These are some that I tie and use. Fire Tiger, Brown Tiger, Fluorescent Yellow, Tennessee Shad and Perch. I also like Blue Tiger, White, and Black. Here's another color combo that I like but I don't have a picture of a pencil popper.
RandallW20 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2007 Cool, I like your fire tiger. I looks better than mine. I haven't thought about doing pearlecent colors. Are you using paint for those or something like siliskin? Thanks! Randall
Philly 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2007 Actually, I'm using permanent markers over either Mother of Pearl or Holographic transfer foil(Jones Tones) on some of them. The Mother of Pearl is translucent and some time I'll do the color first and then add the transfer foil. For the popper I used the holographic silver foil. These are all soft foam poppers. You'll find the hard body foam poppers a bit harder to color and to fade colors.
The Goat 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2007 Are these foam bodies? How do you get them on the hook? Do they just slide over the hook eye, and you cement them in? I've never tied them, and want to try 'em on bass this summer. These look like a fun tie!
RandallW20 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2007 Ahhhhhhh... Ok I see how you do them now. Thank You! Randall
Philly 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Bent: They're all preformed soft foam popper bodies. A couple of different companies make them and I've found them in most fly shops and catalogs. I have two different types, some have a slit cut down the middle on the bottom, and you just wrap some thread around the hook shank and coat with glue or 5 minute epoxy and slide the body on the shank. The others have a hole through the center, and you do the same thing with the shank, and then push the hook through. Or if you have a bit of time and a dremel tool you can buy foam cylinders and shape them yourself.
The Goat 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Thanks Philly. I'll be tying some of these this summer!
day5 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2007 Philly what vise is that? looks like a dan vise patriot mix? If you did what I think you did that is a sweet idea!!!!
Philly 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2007 It's a Danvise. I learned the trick after I brought my first one about 10 years ago, when I stopped in a fly shop in Stockton, CA when I was killing some time on a business trip. You remove the arm the jaws are initially in, and the jaws fit in the slot where the arm was. I haven't noticed any effect on the rotary function and sure makes it easier to tie large flies. I can tie them up to 10-11 inches long without much problem.
Gooseberry 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 Where can you buy foam cylinders to shape yourself?
Philly 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2008 If you have a fly shop near you check and see if they carry them. I've found them in most catalogs, Feathercraft, Barlows, Cabela's used to carry them. I like to work with 3/8" or larger cylinders, gives you a bit more room for error. You can make some simple poppers out of 1/4".

Having trouble finding hooks to match the 2-inch bodies. Do you know exactly what kind (model number and all) of hook you use? Much appreciated. flytire 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2012 What I'm asking is for people to post pics of their designs which will hopefully inspire me to come up w/ new designs (and maybe copy some too) take a look at the fotos in the following links. some of the fotos are of lures, but with a little imagination and effort the colors and designs can be incorporated onto a pencil popper http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=pencil+popper+colors&qs=bs&form=QBIR&adlt=strict#x0y0 https://www.google.com/search?q=pencil+popper+colors&hl=en&safe=active&rlz=1G1TSNACENUS400&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=YHYpT8rqAcXx0gGX8aDPAg&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CBsQ_AUoAQ&biw=1680&bih=
