utyer 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2010 I have more than a hundred books on fly tying, and fly fishing, and many of them contain hundreds of recipies. Duplicating a classic, or standard pattern, has its value, and its place, but I have found its always more fun the tie outside the "box." About the only time I follow a recipe, is when I am tying a custom order. To me the whole point is to make something up and have it work. The last thing I want is for my flies to look like the files in every fly shops fly bins. Following a recipe is usefull when your learning, but what you should learn is the techique involved, and then what modifications could you make with it.
