FlyFishFlo 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2012 Is this an actual type of fly? The closes pattern I could really find to this is the hot pink Pollywog mouse fly. what about muddlers? don't they float as well? (i have never fished them, i'm not much of a streamer guy)
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2012 Yes & no. "Streamers" for the most part are subsurface patterns, and are often a baitfish type fly. But they could imitate other things as well. "Dry" generally means it floats. So, yes, you can have a floating baitfish pattern. A mouse would not usually be considered a streamer, but it could. The fly you mentioned is a surface fly, but if it becomes water logged, it could very well be fished as a streamer. There's no set rules, but the usually accepted definitions for these terms separate them. There can be exceptions & overlap in terms. Pencil poppers are shaped like baitfish & they float, but again, pull them under & they become "Streamers". Bob Clouser has a floating baitfish pattern, and there are others. Muddlers are likely the best example! Good post FlyFishFlo! What are you needing to imitate?
michiganborn 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2012 Nothing in particular. It was just a thought of something big and gaudy on top of the water getting hit by a big fish, lol
michiganborn 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2012 Besides a popper BTW
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2012 You're only limited by your imagination & available materials. Obviously, you need to use something that floats. Take a look at the balsa minnow that Kirk Dietrich just posted. http://"http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=66667&pid=503879&st=0entry503879"
