throwinflys 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 i'm waiting for my hackle gauge to come in so I thought it would be a good time to maybe tie up some comparaduns. I am just looking for everyones tips, tricks, and general know-how on tying these flys. I don't even know if I have the right materials for wings. i only really have 2 kinds of fur to choose from at the moment and thats some good x-caddis deer hair that I've been using for caddis flys, and if I have to get some more materials to tie these suckers, at least i'll know what to get and i'll just tye some nymphs until I get my gauge. thanks fellas! Curtis Fry 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 I usually find Coastal deer hair to be good, but in general I look for little underfur, fine short tips and skinny fibers. I've found that it's easier to have a physical look at the patches before you buy them unless you are confident in where you buy them (online). If you do the online thing, Nature's Spirit actually has some awesome stuff I've also used: http://www.worleybuggerflyco.com/naturesspiritt/ns_comparadun_hair.htm But here's a good article on selecting the right type and tying the comparadun itself: http://globalflyfisher.com/tiebetter/comparadone!/
perchjerker 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 Craig Matthews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, WY, can fix you up with the proper hair for comparaduns. (No financial interest.)
riffleriversteelheadslayer 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 deer shank hair is the best for comparaduns so go out get the deer leg off the deer you shot and give it a shave
SilverCreek 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2013 Go to this earlier thread for my post on how to select comparadun hair. http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=69829 I actually think the hair used in the GFF blog is poor comparadun hair. The tips are way too long, and the tips vary in length as you can see in the photo of it after it has been stacked. On the fly, the wing has a jagged appearance even though the tips are even. This is because the break point from light to the dark tips is not consistent. See if you don't agree after you have read how I grade hair. http://globalflyfisher.com/tiebetter/comparadone!/ I have rarely find any packaged compardun hair" that is good hair as I grade hair.
