Jimr1961 0 Report post Posted May 30, 2013 If you're going to do a hopper with turkey wing slip for the wing case, try tying a few replacing the turkey with a church window or the mottled feathers just above from a Ringneck Pheasant. Dip it in poly urethane and squeegie it off between your fingers and let it dry on wax paper. they make very nice wing cases, light and hold up well. http://www.jackgartside.com/step_pheasant_hopper.htm
Bryon Anderson 0 Report post Posted May 30, 2013 Nobody has suggested A.K. Best's "A.K.'s Hopper", so I thought I'd toss it into the mix. According to A.K., it is an amalgam of his three favorite hopper patterns: Joe's Hopper, the Letort Hopper and the Whitlock Hopper. Here's a link that shows how I tie it: http://truenorthtrout.com/2009/07/midsummer-hoppers-a-k-s-hopper/ I also like Rainey's Parachute Hopper: http://truenorthtrout.com/2009/07/midsummer-hoppers-the-parachute-hopper/ and the venerable Madam X: http://truenorthtrout.com/2009/07/midsummer-hoppers-the-madam-x/ I know that big slabs of multi-colored foam and about a dozen boingy legs are all the rage in hopper patterns these days, but I've come to prefer these simpler patterns that use mostly natural materials. They look more natural to me, and the brown trout here in Michigan seem to agree, because I've hung some whoppers on all three of these patterns.
