Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2013 This one is a spin rod for a customer for some bass/walleye. 6'6" Batson blank with custom split grips, Pb guide set, garnet main and gold metallic trim.
Spanky29ca 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2013 That's a real beauty Steve, that purple and gold looks really nice together
mikechell 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2013 Looks like a nice light spinning rod. I use them quite a bit when I am "lunch time fishing." Most of the places I can get to for lunch don't have any room for back casts, so I don't fly fish. I still can't decide, though, what to make of the flat finish rods. It just looks ... unfinished ... to me.
Bryon Anderson 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2013 Very nice. I love the idea of putting the inscription on the exposed blank between the grip and fighting butt. I built that exact same rod--minus the nice marbled cork grip--for my uncle and he loves it. He just about won't fish with any other rod.

netabrookie 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2013 I like the flat finish a lot. I don't spin fish anymore, so I wouldn't know if it matters if it is a flat or gloss finish. Sometimes I try to be as sneaky as possible while I am on a mountain stream and have often thought that the glossy rod was going to reflect the sunlight that was peeking through the trees. I want a rod that has nothing that can gleam or glare in the sunlight, but I haven't gotten into trying to build them yet and I have no idea if there is black guides available. It's just my rugged mountain fishing opinion speaking here but on the other hand I have seen some pictures of Steve's and others rods with a glossy finish that were completely awesome. I guess it's just personal taste...I wouldn't want a flat finish on a Ferrari, but I wouldn't take that up in the mountains and I wouldn't want a glossy finish on a military vehicle that I was stalking an opponent with either.....By the way, I like the inscription on the exposed blank also. Another nice one Steve...
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2013 All personal preference when it comes to finish. Some guys love it because of reasons netabrookie mentioned, others like a gloss finish better. There's all sorts of choices out there that suit everyones taste
mikechell 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2013 All reasons mentioned are why I am still undecided.
