Flies for Iceland salmon

Recommended Posts

Hello,
My friend is coming to Iceland for salmon fishing this year (first week of July).
He will fish the Laxa in Adaldal & Hofsa Rivers.
He had asked me to tie some flies most suitable for these streams.

Could you tell me the names of the flies which are the best, and the hook sizes?

Are the double hooks legal in Iceland?

Thank you!
Tight lines!

I haven't a lot of information but two things. The Francis is very popular. Also some small flies with enough space between head and eye to accomodate a riffling hitch. That is an extra knot tied around the shank behind the eye so the fly fishes at 90 degrees to the leader.

Cheers,

C.

Google these mate:

Þýsk Snælda (any kind of snælda fly really but Þýsk e.German is very effective)

Red Frances, maybe size 14 on a golden hook

Sunray shadow

These 3 flies are mainstays here in Iceland and should grace the fly box for every salmon fisherman coming here.

The Friggi fly did very well in 2013. Short tube. Body of hot green butt/dark green front. Rib of silver. Wings top and bottom artic runner zonker strip with under fur combed out. Hold the zonker strip along the fly with the rib. Head is a collar of hackle but the pics I've seen look more like cross cut fur strip. Cone head to complete.

Heres an article about "Friggi". It contains a good picture of it for refference.

It's true what Pike said, it did do very well last summer here in Iceland. The man who tied it got the name copyrighted and caused quite a bit of controversy. But it's a good fly and effective. It was originally tied to fish Arctic Char but the salmon do like it :)

Thank you all for great info! Now I will be able to tie the flies which will later travel 7000 km to reach Iceland.

On the Friggy: how does it behave in the current? These two opposite wings make its design very strange...

Best wishes!

I tied up a version this spring. It seems to move very well especially in the slower tails or long steady runs. It is really important to comb out the zonker strip so you have the long hair and not the fluffy under fur. I also tied one with finn raccoon zonker strip and it swam lovely too. Easier to source Finn Raccoon than icelandic pony here.

I have finished a set of flies for Iceland salmon. Thank you all for your help! I will work on Friggy and some otther flies later.

According the info from Internet the rivers of Iceland are very clear.

Salmon from this country prefer tiny flies – they are made on the hooks from #16 to #8.

As a rule they are tied on double or treble hooks, or on tiny tubes.

I do not know how to call this fly, but the fish should like it. In worst case, if salmon will refuse it, we will use it to catch grayling.

Like those. The snaelda and Frances could be a little more carrot shaped but I dont think the fish mind.

Dont forget to take some sunrays with you also. 6inch or there abouts to really get the fish popping.
