Herters RF92 Fly Rod

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a 9 foot Herters RF92 3 piece fly rod in very good condition. Would anyone have any information regarding this rod.

Any information would be appreciated.

I have no personal experience with this rod, but it is listed in my 1972 Herter's catalog. It's listed under, Herter's Grand Deluxe Finished Fly Rods. 9' , 2-piece, 7 wt $18.90.

In your 28 June 2015 Posting regarding a Herters RF92 fly rod. You stated that your 1972 Herters Catalog listed the RF92 as a 7 weight. Was that the only weight listing for that model ?

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but I was dealing with health issues.

I would appreciate any help you can give.

acal, I sincerely hope your health issues are resolved. You've been awhile for quite a while. Gosh I loved the old Herter's catalogs and wish I'd saved them all. On the right line for any rod, especially older ones probably listed with the old HCH symbols, the only way to reall know if the right weight line is to get out and use it with a few lines. An older glass rod like that is probably going to handle a couple of line weights fine and which you go with is often based on how far you're normally fishing. If a 6 and a 7 both work fine then the 6 is usually better for longer casting, the 7 for shorter casting and can handle wind resistant flies better. Good luck and good to see you posting again.

Thank you very much for your reply. The health issues are resolved. My issues started last fall, but my primary physician failed to link my symptoms with heart issues.

To make a long story short, there is a God who felt it best to continue my life!!!!

I think there is a website for classic fly rods. Might do a search for it or post on the Rod Building Forum.

I'll get out that catalog tonight and take a look. I think it only listed a 7wt.

My catalog shows three rods in the series:

RF82, 9' 6wt

RF852, 8 1/2' 7wt

RF92, 9' 7wt

I did try casting a 7, 8 and 9 weight line with the RF92 and it was darn near effortless with the 9wgt. It did a great job with the roll cast and overhead as well. As I went lower in line weight it became increasingly more difficult to cast.

I also took a closer look at the rod and found that one of the upper sections had been broken and a new tip top was replaced and wrapped. That explained why I thought it was a three piece to begin with. The original owner must have ordered a new section and repaired, and kept, the shorter section.

Thanks to all that helped !!! Maybe in time more info. might come about.

Yay ! the Steelhead are starting to come in, it looks like I will be taking the RF92 out shortly.
