troutguy 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2016 Take the tail and skin it out about a half inch or so. Grab the peeled skin with newspaper in your hand to help with your grip. Grab the tail bone with a pair of pliers and pull. The bone pulls right out of the tail. Take a knife and split the tail and then borax. No rot or bad smell. Tail keeps for years. JayWirth 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2016 For dubbing with short hair animals like Muskrat, squirrel, rabbit mask I cut a section about 4x4 and use a dubbing rake starting at 1 corner and scratch some hair each time I tie a fly. As others have mentioned you can also use scissors or clippers and cut the hair and mix. I think that natural pelts provide a good natural selection of colors - I like to stick to what I think may be more true to traditional methods and don't really try to use gadgets and a lot of time mixing colors. Don't get me wrong I also have an embarrassing amount of synthetic dubbing material.
