Working with Life Flex

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody... I'm trying to tie Pat's Rubberlegs, but have run into issues using Life Flex... first of all, when I got it out of the package, it was all curled up and difficult to work with, especially when trying to create an antenna.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to straighten it out? or at least remove some of the curl?

I have never had the same problem with the flex legs I use. You might try REALLY hot water. Soak it for a few minutes, then hang clamped with a bull clip on each end. Then hang some weight 1/2 ounce or so on the bottom clip.

Mine are so old, I don't know what brand they are. I couldn't even tell you where I got them. This pattern has been around since before there were any kind of flex legs, It was called a girdle bug back then, and round rubber legs were used, I have tied them with round, square rubber, silicon, and flex legs. They all catch fish. Come to think of it, I don't usually put antennae on mine.

Those look suspiciously like FlyTiersDungeon "bug legs". If that's the same type of leg material, you won't be able to straighten it out. The hot water trick MIGHT work, but I doubt it'll hold. I use "bug legs" and it's supposed to be curly like that. You can sew them all through the same hole and guarantee they won't all be sticking straight out together.

For straight legs, antennae or tails, you'll need some other type of leg material.
