Tom Cummings 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 Don't buy kit. It cost more than you will use. Doing elk hair caddis next group. If u need mats when I replenish hooks I can hook u up. I have about 20 size 16 so it's soon.
xterrabill 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 thanks ....but no thanks man, I do appreciate the offer big time tho really. what are mats? anyway LOL materials? I have to make an order ...like super soon, I actually broke my fly line today! it was only 20 years old, cracked and discolored. now it has a nailknot at about 20 ft. I believe it was Cortland wf 4. I will be looking online for some later tonight. any suggestions would be appreciated.
Tom Cummings 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2017 I use WF5 from orvis store. They give free with purchase either high vis or low vis backing at 100 yds but online I don't think you get the backing. And yes mats is materials. Good luck my friend. mikechell 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2017 E-bay ... fly line for $9.00 a spool. Great selection of colors, if you want to match your rod. I've got some, on a few of my rods, that are several years old and still going.
xterrabill 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2017 the household needed a few things, went to cabelas, picked up some mats and line while I was there. the in house maintenance man needed new winter boots for snow removal, found them in the bargain barn (last years model) they are stocking up now with the newer stuff. always good to check the bargain bins.....I found dry fly hooks and tippet also. Tom Cummings 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2017 Nice to hear your back up with the trip. A local in my area is excited that he ran into me. He wants to learn tying and fly fishing. I have a spare vise and plenty of materials so tying is no problem. His cast needs work as I showed him my setup and he is used to spun cast. He did however execute about a dozen cast and I encouraged and no negativity. He is willing to learn and in time it will payoff for me as I usually go it alone. Will be nice to be out with another. xterrabill 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2017 great! I befriended a fella recently (nam vet) who used to fly fish and got him back into it some, I just happened to see him again last week, his son had him out fly fishing.....very cool indeed. I tied some drunk fly's myself tonight, they didn't come do good LOL...still fishable tho. might get out in the morning and test drive the new line. xterrabill 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2017 went out for a couple hours today to a catch and release small lake that had some larger bluegills in it, the bass I seen would not bite, but I did manage to get a few of gills to hit, and they hit hard. Here is a pic of the first one I caught on a flip flop popper. I don't care for the flip flop rubber, it starts to sink after about 15 minutes of fishing, I like cork better but I cant make cork ones small enough, might be time to step up to balsa. anyway, I photo shopped a better pic of the popper used into the pic with the fish. when the temps reached 94f. I had to go....brutal humidity.

xterrabill 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2017 good evening gents, I found this at the local library .... Basic Fly Tying with Marvin Nolte (2 DVD set) I watched it once and it seems very basic. there nothing wrong with seeing basic procedures. I know I could see 1000's on utube, but its easier for me to watch on the tv instead of the computer when tying.
xterrabill 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2017 I managed to get some decent hackle finally. trying to tie the little ones with my big paws is tough, but I am persistent.
