SpokaneDude 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2016 Hi everybody... I'm trying to tie a Wet/Dry fly; it calls for "covert feather" taken from the top of a duck or coot wing. I normally get all of my materials from Marriott's FlyFishing Shop in Fullerton, CA by mail, but they have about a dozen different types of duck feathers and I'm at a loss as to which feather to purchase. My question is: which feather and what exactly does the "covert feather" look like on the duck feather? (an image would really, really be appreciated) Thanks... phg 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2016 That said ... you need to obtain the whole wing, they usually come in pairs, to get the coverts. Mallard wings are usually pretty easy to find.
Crackaig 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2016 Just because you get a left and a right in a pack doesn't mean they are a pair. Veniards are particularly bad for just throwing a left and a right wing in a bag, and calling it a pair. The best come from one of three sources. Steve at Cookshill, ones you "harvest" yourself, or ones someone you know harvests. Doesn't matter with coverts, but when you come to do slip wings it makes all the difference. Cheers, C.
