  1. Hey Mark, I would love to tie at a show, although it seems intimidating. I am not sure how much interest there is for a show here, it is a small population so it would be difficult to have a large show going on, and finding companies or sponsers would be hard also. Anyways, take care man Phil
  2. Nice photos there, i wish I could make it to one of those events, they look like a good time. Phil
  3. My favorite have been griffin bobbins. The ceramic supreme ones. They have an adjustable one but I find it too bulky, but their regular is awesome and not too pricey.
  4. I am not sure, I always forget that midges require less hackle than a size 12 adams or a royalwulff. I am never used one of these saddles I may have to look into it. p
  5. From my experience you can expect depending on the saddle to me much of 12-14 or 14-16 with some size 18. But that is depending on the saddle. If you want more info let me know, I have a number of whiting saddles and I dont expect to get through them too quick. Phil
  6. I love those boxes, and I pull my dubbing out of the holes. I do think that I could use a little more dubbing then each compartment has to offer, but I often over stock each block with dubbing from bags or masks. I do want a a few of these boxes that are empty so I can put my ice dub and seal dubbing in them, I hate having so many little bags... way too annoying. If anyone has 2-4 of these that are empty and you don't use, drop me a pm maybe we can set up a trade. Phil
  7. a cosseboom! Very nice fly and effective for the atlantics! That fly is tied in a rainbow of colours, you could have a fly box filled with just that pattern in different colour variations. Phil
  8. Very cool! I wouldnt even know where to buy a full Peacock skin, lol Post a pic! Phil
  9. Safe travels there big buddy! Have a good time eh! Phil
  10. Great fly! I have tied some up like this but have only fished it once, and never caught anything on it. Although I caught nothing that day anyways! lol. But I know this is a very productive fly and a wonderful version of it you have here, nice tie.
  11. where ya been man, havent seen you around for a bit. Hope all is well, Phil
  12. I would have to agree that the problem might lay in the wings. Also if your hackle is too large and tail too short or long. But I think futzer has it right that the problem is in the wings. You can use any hair for the wings of a wulff fly, it just so happens that white calf looks best (in my opinion) and body hair is much nicer to work with. Somtimes I use elk which gives a stiff not soft wing like the calf.
  13. Ya mark, I have to agree that tail is outrageous! love the tail. Phil
  14. Cool stuff Mark, you really did a good job with this one, the bead fits nice eh, that hook is cool too! Phil
  15. it depends on the quality of the tail and hair you have, and also where on the tail you are taking it from. For me it is not unusual to take the hair twice for really straight tips, sometimes more I think, but mostly I dont care about perfection with the tips. p
  16. thats cool mark, That was a great find, and a wicked ammount of gut for making loop eyes. What sizes were those hooks in? Phil
  17. post it up mark, im excited im sure it will look great. Those hooks were a wicked find eh, phil
  18. Mark what is that hackle and wing feather? Phil
  19. Hey Mark! That is a nice fly. You know what does it for me? The feather wing!! (I dont know what type of feather that is) But also the hackle, man that is nice! I love how thick and distinct! They work very well together they have a similar tinge, and that hackle has a wicked color. Another stunner Mark. What type of hook is that by the way and what size?? Phil
  20. tie in 2-3 strands of herl and twist it around your ribbing, or your thread and then wrap up your body. I always cut off the first inch of the herl tip because I find it the most fragile. Likewise you may have some brittle herl. But if you wrap your herl with your thread or rib you will solve your problem of it breaking and also reinforce it so it will last longer on the fly while fishing. Phil
  21. Hey guys, I have a wicked nice hungarian partridge skin that I use for softies, but I want to tie up some nice all black soft hackles, in size range from 10-18 but mostly in the 10-12 range. What is a good source for black hackle for this range of fly? any sources for this sort of hackle? Thanks a lot! Phil
  22. There are a lot of opinions on this issue, but what it comes down to is personal opinion. I have never had a problem with mustad hooks and probably have caught more fish on them than any other. But this is because I have used them a lot more. Personally I like the look, feel and point of the tiemco hook, for salmon I like the daiichi Bob Veveraka (sp) hook. Never the less, I do think cost has an important factor in the consideration of a hook, but I suggest trying different brands, its an important part of fly tying. But some brands that might fit in your price tag will probably be mustad and dai riki, both great hooks, although the colour of the dai riki hook is a little golden for me. Their scud style hook is nice though. Anyways im glad you have come to the light side, fly tying is a great hobby. If there is anything I can help with let me know, Phil
  23. Hey Mark, that does look like a jet stream tail! pretty cool man!! Phil
  24. Depends what type of hook. I say try to compare the hooks that you normally use with a more curved one. If you were to use the partridge ones I would suggest getting them in 18-20.
