  1. I'm working on a project and I need a hand. I need to compile a list of every style of fly pattern out there for imitating each phase of a mayfly's life cycle. I'm going to come back at a future date and ask this again for other macroinvertibrates such as stones, caddis, etc., but right now I'm just focusing on mayfly imitations. I would have started this list out with more but I'm short on time, but here are a few examples of what I'm looking for- just to reiterate, I'm looking for fly styles, not specific patterns. (I'll edit this post as you guys add to this.) Thanks! 2. True, but only for the initial mailing. After that, he's the one who puts every single magazine in those envelopes. Remember that episode of Seinfeld?

There's just something about those double hooks. Nice tying, as always, Paul. :headbang:
  4. Shaq ties a nice Iso nymph, here's a link to the regular version. He also ties an articulated version that works well, but I'm not sure if he's got a pic posted anywhere.
  5. That sucks. What kind of vise was it? What broke?
  6. Of the online fly fishing e'zines that have popped up over the last couple years, I gotta say I like Catch the best*. *Hatches excluded as it's a tying mag, not fishing**. **Though I'd love to throw out a hint at whats on the way...

  9. If you want to see the difference between the two on a finished fly, here is one I tied a few years ago where I used swiss straw and medallion on both the legs and wingcases . I could have only used one, but didn't have the two colors I needed on hand in just one of the materials. I won't tell you where I used what
  10. I was looking for the same thing about 4 years ago, and told myself that someday when I had the time/resources, that I'd write such a book; cause you're right, there isn't one out there. I actually started writing it, and realized that if I did it the way I wanted to do it, it would never be published as the costs would be too high for both the publisher and the reader. So for the past few months, I've been building a website that focuses on the stuff fish eat, and how to imitate it; except it will go a lot further than just insects, and focus on pretty much everything fish (both fresh and saltwater) eat- then it'll have every type/style of imitation for that particular critter- and how to tie that style of fly. Best part is I have a way to show all this stuff without cluttering things up. I had about 400 bugs/baitfish pages up, and was just about ready to let it go live, but lost all of it 2 weeks ago when I was messing around with my database(lesson learned= back stuff up before you find out what that cool looking button does :wallbash: ). Since I already know where I'm going with it, and how everything will be laid out, etc. I'm going to let it go live in the next week or so, and use RSS/Facebook/Twitter to let people know when new insects/baitfish/etc. are added to the site. Here is the link for anyone who is interested
  11. I've always thought of medallion sheeting as a more durable version of swiss straw, so for most applications that call for the medallion, I'll use swiss straw instead- though I can think of a few patterns where I've used both.
  12. Anyone gonna try and get pics of the Perseid Meteor Shower tonight?
  13. I climbed Giant Mountain in the Adirondacks(4627') with my son on Friday and took some pics from the top. (before you click, I should warn you that I made this pic absolutely freakin' huge- 9000 something by 2000 something pixels I had a tripod with me, but thought my hands were steady enough to put a decent panorama together, so I left it in my backpack. After trying to put the pics together, I wish I would have used it, as it was impossible to hide the splices. Still, I thought the view was worth sharing.
  14. I just started a photoblog today and was looking for some other fly fishing related photoblogs to link to, anyone here have one?
  15. If I wanted to tie a foam popper, where would that go? Another question I have- if I want to tie a streamer for the itsy bitsy category, would you stick it in the "streamer size 6 and smaller" category on me? What about Looks great, Will :headbang:
  16. Thanks guys! Jay, how you painted the face without making it look like a painted face is just mind boggling. Care to share any tips?
  17. Background- Every Memorial Day the church that my in-laws go to does a tribute to the members of the church who served in the military, as well as their family members who served in the military. Basically, they collect pictures from everyone then do a slideshow. Well, my father-in-law is putting together a stack of pictures from all of his family members who served in the military. Only problem is, my wife's grandpa lost his picture from when he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. However, my father-in-law does have a picture of his uncle, who also was in the Army in Korea the same year. Turns out, before going to Korea, gramps married my wife's grandma. So my father-in-law gives me a picture of gramps, and the military pic of his uncle, hoping that I can photoshop gramps' face onto his uncle's body so he can be in this slide show. The tricky part for me is that the picture with gramps' face on it is smaller than the military pic of the uncle. I did the best I could with it, but am hoping someone here with a little free time might be able to do better. It's not that the job I did isn't good enough, I'm sure it will serve it's purpose just fine- but a couple weeks ago gramps had a heart attack, and the doctors said that he's "on borrowed time", so I'd really like to give my in-laws a quality picture- quality that my photoshop skills aren't capable of. Here's the military pic of the uncle And here's the pic with gramps' face I need to put on the body above And here's my best effort thus far
  18. Sounds like the problem is that you're seeing your errors after the fly is finished. To tie good flies, you've got to be able to recognize an error when it's happening or just after it's happened. Then undo your mistake and redo it as many times as are necessary till you've got it right. You'll find that the next time you come to that step that gave you trouble, you'll get it right a lot sooner. If you just let yourself do something wrong, you'll keep doing it wrong.
  19. :hyst: What made you decide to go with the Olympus, Bob?
  20. Joe Cornwall, the guy who originally created this pattern just chimed in on how it cam about, etc., for anyone who's interested. He also filled in an important detail on the Shaolin Monks' gear selection... http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/40rivers/.../03/11/the-one/
  21. Smalliehunter is out of town right now, I'm sure he'll help out with the error when he gets back. Also, since you're new to blogging and wordpress, you might want to check this page out Wordpress Lessons Wordpress also has support forums that are very helpful when you can't figure something out.
  22. Rob, Right now, the only place I know of where you can see what's happening on several of the Hatches hosted blogs is here- http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/ This is where post intros from featured blogs will be aggregated. I don't know of a place that "lists" all of the blogs yet, but I'm sure it will happen somewhere down the line.
