  1. Here is what I use. Color variant of a moto's minnow. I do several colors. Easy to tie. MWL
  2. Anyone FF for carp? I was fishing a local pond the other night. There was a ton of large carp. They where just moving around the surface. Sometimes looked like they were sipping air. I have caught a few carp in my life by accident. Anyway, does anyone have any info on this? Can they be caught while cruising along the top? I tried fishing under them with a small crayfish but no luck. Thanks, MWL
  3. I spray them with clear lacquer or poly. Works well for me. Very fast dries fast. MWL
  4. Maxima clear, last 2 or 3 sections ultra green. depending on what type of fishing. Salt water all clear Maxima. MWL
  5. I have been FF for 42 years. I can't remember when I started de barbing hooks. But it's been a really long time. I really don't believe a barb helps you in any type of fishing. I have caught more than 200 Tarpon on fly, never 1 with a barb. I feel you get a better "deeper" hook up. Again I have caught every thing from Tuna to trout. Some guys may disagree and that's fine. But for me no barbs ever. And as some of the fellows mentioned, if you should stick one in your self or a buddy, you will be glad if there is no barb. Just my opinion. MWL
  6. Pheasant tail variant. size 16. MWl
  7. Thanks guys for your advice. Sounds to me I should just do what I do best which is either swing a streamer or bounce a nymph. Thanks, MWL
  8. I need a little advice. I will be going steelhead fishing in mid March on the Salmon River. Weather and water level pending. Anyway, could someone give me some suggestions for flies? I am getting conflicting results. Some guys are telling me fish more natural types this time of year. Such as black stones. Other folks are suggesting using brightly colored flies or streamers. Not looking to get your secrete patterns just some solid info. Thanks, MWL
  9. Please bear with me guys. I know it is the same fly different angle. I am just learning how to do this. Thanks, MWL
  10. Hi Guys, I have not posted in a while. Thought I would share one of my flies. This is my favorite Golden Stonefly nymph. Also the first time I have tried posting a pic. Please feel free to tell me how I could improve posting pics. Thanks, MWL
  11. Jhammer, sorry to hear about your health issue. If you may be interested. My Neice has MS. Dr's put her on some very leathal medication, it was awful for her. She started seeing a holistic Dr. He has helped her tremendously. She has not taken any meds for 2 yrs. now and is doing amazingly well. For her it was all about diet excercise and supplements. Many people with Ms have multiple food allergies and don't even know it. if you have any intrest let me know. I could give you the Dr's name and I am sure he could hook you up with someone in your area. Good luck and God bless, MWL
  12. Clemmy, I don't know if anyone is still making it. But you can get it. Lots of people deal in vintage materials. I have lots of it in several sizes in gold and silver. I do use it and often. It is just fun to use. I used to tie full dressed flies and came across someone who was selling a collection. I bought all their tinsel and lots of feathers. I don't do full dressed flies anymore, so I sold most of the feathers but I kept all the tinsel. are you looking for some or just curious? MWL
  13. Nice tie, good job on the body. Is that a quill? MWL
  14. Never tried those. But nice tie! MWL

    Comparadun

    Nice fly, well done. MWL
  16. As far as the adams, not bad for a first. My comments would be shorten the wings a bit. Move the wing closer to the eye. It will give you a longer body, which is needed. Also try to tighten up the hackle. Good tie for your first. Lets see the next! MWL
  17. They look good to me. I have been tying sulfers and BWO's with zelon winges for a while now. They work good for me. So why not March Browns. Nice ties too. MWL
  18. That was great animation. Someone has too much time. lol MWL
  19. Thanks guys, I am having so much fun teaching these guys. They are having a ball. Last nights class we tied their fisrt comparadun. They were so excited. They can't wait to catch a fish on their own flies. MWL
  20. Flonzy, not too bad for a beginner, actually really good. Your bait fish patten looks good. On you sliders, it is hard to see but it looks like your collars could be a bit heavier. The tails are nice and heavy a bit more on the collar could help balance your fly. The slider with the rubber legs, the legs look a bit too long. If so they can tend to tangle around the hook while casting. Nothing worse than having a great fish turn from you fly at the last minute because the fly was fouled. I am speaking from experience of course. I have had my share. But all in all they look darn good. Keep tying! MWL Thanks for the advise. I was thinking of the same about the rubber. The collar though...do you mean I should not cut so much or that I should make it a full 360 wrap? I only did the the under side. Thanks. I think I would like the collar 360 as you stated. It will give a nicer profile. Or if you only want to do 1 side I would do it on the top. A collar either all the way around or on the top will also help keep it weedless. Let it extend past the hook bend a bit. I use lots of flies like that for Redfish and bones. MWL

  22. Jordon, if I could jump in here. First of all, not bad for a first attempt. The other guys already gave you good advice on the wings. But my 2 cents. It looks like you use pheasent tail for you tail. Not really sure it is hard to see. If so, there are better choices. I prefer to use Moose hair for my spinner tails, or light colored elk for pale colored flies. It will hold up better and also float better. For small flies use micro fibbets. All these materials are very reasonable to buy and will last a reallt long time. Also try some poly yarn for your wings. It will tie easier for you and be more uniform. It also floats very well. But keep tying, nice job. Just my 2 cents. MWL
  23. Wally, yes it is fun. If I could offer a little advice. If you have a local fly shop, go there and pick your materials. If you have a buddy who ties take him with you. Have someone show you what to look for when buying materials. I am doing a small tying class for some of my friends. They get excited real easy and start buying alot of stuff they will never use. I have cautioned them on this so they don't waste their money. Also one of the guys has been mail ordering his materials. Some of what he is getting is good quality, some is not. This is why I recomend taking a buddy to the local shop and have someone help you pick out the best materials for the flies you will tie. For me personally I also choose to support the small local fly shops. You will often get the best advice from them. Good luck with your tying. MWL :headbang:
  24. Well we are about in the 6th week of my tying class. It is going well. I have 3 guys who come consistently. We have tyed wolly buggers, green weenies, hares ear nymph, black nose dace, elk hair cadis, and a couple of soft hackles. The guys are doing alot of practicing as well. The are all coming along pretty good. Also it has been alot of fun for me! This week we may do a comparadun. We will also review some basic technics. These guys are so excited. They can't wait to catch a fish on one of their own flies. It will be exciting to see them fish this Spring. MWL
