  1. Thanks Joe. I'll have to see if I can sneak up there this Spring...
  2. QUOTE (day5 @ Aug 26 2005, 04:32 AM) Sorry sharpster and BMF but I gues it is best if I stick to my earlyer statement and call the swap closed. Sorry about that but I need to be respestfull to the other guys. No problem. I've been really busy with a work project so I was going to have to burn a little Midnight Oil this weekend anyways. I'm still playing with original ideas and getting back into the hang of tying flies...
  3. My daughter tied her first fly last night with my help! She called it Jocelyn's Jack-O'-Lattern. It's a Woolly Worm with a yellow yarn tail, orange body, and black hackle. I'll post a pic this weekend. She wants to tye more flies this wekend. I figure by Sunday she'll be tying them all by herself except for whip finishing and sealing the head. Even I hate that part...
  4. I should be able to make Sep. 20. I know you called it closed and extended the invitation to me, that's why I extended my offer via PMs. If anybody would like to include me, great! If not, I completely understand and I'm big enough not to take it personally. Is everyone weighting theirs, or do most folks tye them unweighted? I'm looking at silver solder for weighting. I won't use lead and I can't get my hands on any depleated uranium wire!
  5. Weird. I couldn't see any of the other replies until after I started to post this reply... I'm not going to pressure my daughter, but she's really pressuring me! Ran to Wally World last night to buy a skane of yarn. I bought the rainbowed stuff that changes color every 4-5". That way we'll get a lot of different tail colors for different combinations. I also downloaded Al's How-To vids and watched them this weekend. I'm planning to do big buggers on 1/0 hooks for bass. My design would be a yarn and flashabou tail, chennille body, palmered hackle, tinsel, and bucktail lower streamer to imitate a firetiger-type pattern from a crankbait if you guys know what I'm talking about. My second idea is to change the colors to blue and silver to imitate shad patterns. I'll tye both and post pics when their done, but it will be a week before I have a chance due to my work schedule. I'd love to participate, but I won't be able to get flies done in 2-3 weeks. If there is anyone in this swap that would like to swap with me in 4-6 weeks, please PM me. I just don't want to end up on the "jerk" swapper list!
  6. QUOTE (day5 @ Aug 19 2005, 04:08 AM) BMF would you like toi join us ? In the future, yes. Right now, for this swap, no, but thank you for the invitation. I have a few ideas for new woolly buggers, but I'm still gathering materials and tools. I need a hair stacker, ceramic bobin, and a Danvise. I'm just getting back into tying. I mainly pursue largemouth and bluegills, so a woolly bugger swap will be right up my alley. My daughter wants to learn tying too, so I'll get myself back up to speed, then start teaching her. I even bought purple chenille, purple hackle, and purple bucktail for her. Can you guess what her favorite color is? Just happens that purple is also a great color for bass... I also plan to brush out the dog's coat for some fine dubbing material. He's a beagle so it's a really fine, downy undercoat. I'll call the fly a Woolly Beagle Bugger.
  7. Hey guys, I'm just getting started in tying again after an attempt over 15 years ago. Would everyone please post pics of their woolly buggers and add them to the database so I can gain a little inspiration?
  8. Thanks Mark. I'll be trying the Stren Super Braid in 10lb test on my UL spinning reel since it has a 3lb test dia. It's also a very fine braid so it's not supposed to lock into itself like some of the others do. The UL spinning reel will be a VERY good test of this line. I've tried about six other superlines on my light spinning reels and two were crap, three were decent, but have to be stripped more regularly, and one does really well all the time. I can't remember which one is the good one, I'd have to pull the reels and match them to the line spools. I had no intention of not using the reel. I know you can bring in small fish w/o the reel, but I plan to use the reel all the time since I'll be going after BIG bass. I want to make sure I learn how to fight the fish with the reel so that when I catch a lunker, I don't lose it because I did something wrong and snapped the leader. BTW, my mom's maden name was Delaney her sisters still live in Northern NJ.
  9. I called Redington and I would get the full warranty. Didn't have a chance to get back by there due to an issue with work. Had to run parts to a customer on my way back to Evansville. I'll stop by next week and see if it's still there. They also had the Okuma Sierra real in a 7/8 for $40. That's seems pretty good to me since I would have to $5-$8 to have one shipped anyways. I'll buy the "beginner" WFF line since I'll be a beginner casting bass bugs anyways. Does the backing type matter? Can I just use a 40lb Stren Super Braid? Or does it have to be a Dacron braid? The Stren would be a smaller diameter per test so I could use 40lb in place of 20lb.
  10. Thanks guys. I want a slower rod to start. For $80 I'll keep it and use it to introduce others to fly fishing or set my daughter up with it an a couple of years... I'm going to call Redington tomorrow and make sure this place is an authorized dealer so I'll be covered by the lifetime warranty. I need to go back over there tomorrow anyways. I forgot to get tinsel and olive thread. Plus the guy that gives the lessons will be working tomorrow so I can talk to him too.
  11. My wife is a huge Weezer fan. I was also considering the TFO Series One rods. I want to spend a little more and get a rod with a lifetime guarantee. The Sage Launch M-F 2-pc rod is on my list as well. My thoughts were to buy a lower cost ($100-$150) slower action rod to learn with. Then if I stick with it and really get addicted, then I would step up to a better, faster action rod. I need a little better reel since I'll be pursuing bass and will need a reel with a great drag. I fish a lot of old stripper pits on private property and there are some big fish in those pits!
  12. A local fishing store has an 8-wt, 9' two piece Redington RS2 rod on sale for $80 w/o the case. The RS3 replaced the RS2, but is the RS2 still a good rod for a beginner? It's a Medium/Medium-Fast rod so I know that's better for a newbie. Do all the Redington's have Lifetime Warranties? I plan to do mostly largemouth Bass fishing so I was planning to get an 8-wt., 9' rod. Only thing I lose is the case, but the new RS3 rods are $200. I can buy a nice case for $40. This would allow me to buy a little nicer reel too and still be under $250 for the whole investment. Thanks guys.
  13. QUOTE (Blueman89 @ Aug 15 2005, 01:29 PM) Welcome to the site. Did you get the thread title from Austin Powers? Of course! That's still one of the funniest lines in the whole campy movie! Graham I was afraid you were going to say that... I was hop[ing the last time you went, you were on public land closer to Indy. Batesville is a haul for me. No easy way to get there, at least not until they finally build I-69 down to Evansville.
  14. Thanks again. Can't wait for the little guy to arrive. We just want to see him and hold him. My daughter is at a great age and she's really excited about her new brother too. I've been told the Smallies in the Blue River are really nice with a lot of large ones IF you know where to go. Luckily, one of my customers fishes for them on Blue River every year, so this Fall, I'm tagging along with him. I'll cover the cost of his flies and lunch. Want to share the general area where these limestone creeks are? How far outside of Indy? Point me in the right direction and I'll find 'em.
  15. Graham If you were with the Hillenbrand family, you were a lot further East than I am. Evansville is in the far, southwestern corner of Indiana where In, KY, and IL meet. The farthest East I go for business is Louisville, KY, then I go up towards Bedford, over to Vincennes, and due South to Evansville. I'm looking forward to fly fishing. I've been infatuated with it for over twenty years since I was about ten years old. Just never had the time or finances to have an opportunity to pursue it. We have a baby boy due the beginning of October so the time will still be short, but I'm getting my 6 /2 year old daughter interested in fishing so she's my excuse to get a line wet! I'll be ordering a Danvise from J. Stockard this month while it's on special. Christmas and birthday will be very easy for my family thisyear! I need to cull through the fly patterns on this board and start gathering new materials. Luckily there are a couple of very good fishing stores in Louisville with very large fly fishing and fly tying sections. I need hooks, head cement, tinsel and new streamer feathers. I also want to tye a few poppers too.
