  1. Because that is the style of tournament it is. It provides a unique challenge to the contestants and makes you think hard about your fly selection. So, no, they don't get as many of whatever fly they want to fish. That isn't a two fly tournament. If you think this sounds crazy you should check out the Jackson Hole One Fly. You get a single fly for the whole day. Two days. Teams of 4. No monetary prizes but they give out some nice gear to the winners. $7,200 for a normal team and $12,000 for a sponsor team this year.
  2. David, thank you for the reference point. I did not know what those types of events cost. I was basing the price on a single fly event on the Green River in Utah and looking at where the Jackson Hole One Fly is at in pricing. Might have to rethink the price point a little or figure out how to connect with that small group.
  3. I'm trying to get an idea if there is any interest in a two-fly tournament in Great Smoky Mountain NP. There would be teams of two people that would draw morning and evening fishing locations. Each person would be allowed two of the same fly pattern for the day. Once the flies are gone, they cannot score any more points. Points would be assigned for each fish caught and for the biggest fish a person catches. Team with the most points wins. The proceeds from this would be going directly to brook trout conservation and reintroduction, split 75/25 between the region in general and the park itself. We are currently trying to decide what a good cost per team is and I'd like to price it at $750. So, let me know what you think. Are there people out there that would participate at that price knowing it is really about conservation funding? Thanks for the help.
  4. Everything went out this afternoon. I'll try and get pictures up on Friday or Saturday. I think this may be the last swap I host, at least for a while, so thanks for taking part.
  5. Final set arrived yesterday. Planning to get them back in the mail on Monday or Tuesday.
  6. Sixteen days after the post marked date, atxdiscgolfer's flies arrived! So, we are still waiting on one set of flies at this point.
  7. Two more packages arrived today. I will get the front page updated tomorrow. Just waiting on one more set.
  8. Could also be seen as a flashback pheasant tail variation. Looks like a great fly.
  9. Got packages in from vic and mandog today. I'm still holding out hope for yours, atxdiscgolfer. Shoot me a pm with the address I gave you just so I can confirm I didn't screw that up somehow.
  10. Should have an address to everyone who has asked and updated the front page for everything I have received.
  11. Alright, how is everyone else doing with their flies? Anyone need an address from me? I should have cleared up the inbox problem but let me know if it isn't working.
  12. Cleaned out the inbox. Sorry about that. Vic - I'm sorry to say but that address was two moves ago. Hopefully they get sent back to you by whoever lives there now.
  13. vic - shoot me a message with what address you used. Haven't seen your flies yet and no one around me fishes that I know of.
  14. Difficult to tell but, comparing your fly to photos McPhail's ties, it seems like you ended the body too far from the eye. That lead to you having a lot of hook to cover after tying in the grouse, so you covered it all in peacock and added more bulk up front than there is supposed to be. The hackle should be wound closer to where the first few long fibers of peacock are sticking out below the hook and then you would've only needed a turn or two before making a clean head.
  15. Size 12 and 26 soft hackle pheasant tails. Didn't have the appropriate sized copper wire for the 26 so it is, unfortunately, not present on the fly.
  16. I did get them and have marked it on the first page. Still have a couple spots open. I'll give it until October 1st and then close it up if no one else joins.
  17. Got everybody on the list that has signed up. I decided to move the deadline back a little in a hope to get a few more people signed up.
  18. Straight from myfwc.com: "The possession of pelts of bobcat and otter is prohibited during the period of April 1 to Nov. 30 unless pelts have been tagged." Not sure if this only applies to dealers but the wording in the sentence after this makes it sound like checking into a tag wouldn't be a bad thing. There is also a set season (Dec 1 - Mar 1) so you have to be careful in picking one up. Now, since the OP already has it in his possession, I doubt he has to worry about a warden knocking on the door but I'd rather encourage him to pursue the legal course than leave him to get pinched if he does it in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  19. Hmm, maybe I should increase the size to 18 or smaller? Kind of surprised we only have 4 tiers so far.
  20. Mike - There are trapping seasons for river otter in many states but most require you to get a CITES tag for the skin and some say that you are not allowed to possess an untagged skin outside of a specific time frame. DrVette - River otter might be on a handful of states' endangered species list but they are not on the federal endangered species list. To my limited knowledge, they have never been federally protected.
  21. Great find. Make sure to contact your wildlife department and check if there is anything you need to do to keep it. You may need a CITES tag on it in order to legally possess it or sell any part of it.
  22. This would be an easy swap for a beginner or someone who has never swapped before.
  23. That sounds awesome. Can't wait to see it.
  24. Sorry for the confusion. I mean if someone picks a size 20 midge in black with silver wire then someone can do a size 20 midge in purple with silver wire. It's technically the same pattern but different colors. I'd just hate to see everyone tie the same thing even if they'd be good for fishing. As long as it is a midge of some sort, yes.
