  1. Thanks for the information. They both great tyers.
  2. It was nice to meet and talk with some of you at the new Jersey show this past weekend. The spiders that were display were unbelievable. I don't remeber the name of the tier but he was from California and showed how he make the legs for his spider with deer hair very interesting. The brush bristles were used by the other tier there for the legs on his spider. Great job by both tiers. I have tried to tye one realistic fly and it turn out like crap so I haven't tried since. I did enjoyed talking to both tiers. They were both very helpful. I am sorry but I don't remember their names (short memory). Any way they were located in the hall way near the books stand. Great job.
  3. chemprof2001 Thanks for the information. Someone told me there was another chemical but I don't remember the name now it started with an N if I remember correctly. I should have written it down when the person was telling me this information. He stated that it was a 60% 40% mix. I was at some show when the subject came up.
  4. Joelst, Thanks joelst. Is there another mixed with Toluene?
  5. Gram, Thanks for the information. Can you let me who the other manufacturer is. Thanks. AlexC. Thanks for another idea on how to come up with a different pattern.
  6. Does anyone know how to liquefy goop which is what flexcement is. That is what I heard I may be wrong. What I would like to know what two chemical would liquefy goop?
  7. Gram, The pattern with the chartreuse body did you also mention that you tied it in a blue and violet color? If you did where did you buy the blue and violet larve lace? I wrote to them and they said they don't have that colors available. What did you use?
  8. Troutnut: Beautiful pictures. What type of camera did you use to get your pictures? Also what was the aperture setting? Did you use a filter? What was the speed set for?
  9. Steelie, Congradulations to you and your club. It is a great feat to get 39 metals in a fly tying contest.
  10. I also have an early edition and it is a good book. Dave does most of the pencil drawing in the book. I don't know how realistic of a pattern you want but the flies are very good. Dave also has two tapes out for bass flies. The tapes are very good. I beleive Bass Pro Shop sells them under their name. If you ever get a chance to meet Dave in person do it. I did meet Dave in person several years ago. He is very easy to talk to and will give you any advise on how to tying different patterns or just how to fish them.
  11. JJD Thanks for the information. I didn't think of the thinning scissors good idea. I did make the fly a little bulker than it should be. I will pick up a pair of thinning scissors. I will try making them thinner in the future.
  12. JOE BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT REALLY ISN'T THAT HARD TO TIE. IF YOU LAYOUT THE MATERIAL IN THE ORDER THEY GO ON THE HOOK IT WILL TAKE LESS TIME. SINCE EACH BUNCH OF FIBER IS SHORT THEN THE ONE BEFORE IT. I WILL HAVE TO GIVE YOUR COLOR COMBINATION A TRY. BASICALLY I JUST TIED THE PATTERNS JUST TO SEE IF I COULD DO IT. IF ANYONE LIVE IN MARYLAND AND WOULDN'T MIND COMPANY FLY FISHING I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO TRY IT. I WENT WITH SOME FRIEND YEARS AGO BUT THE FISHING WASN'T THAT GREAT AND NONE OF US KNEW WERE TO GO OR HOW TO FISH FOR BLUES OR STRIPPERS WADING. SEAN JUAN I WILL GIVE IT A TRY WITH LESS MATERIAL. I DIDN'T USE THAT MUCH WHEN I TIED THESE AND IT DOES BULK FAST.
  13. MARK FOR SOME REASON WHICH I CAN'T EXPLAIN I GUESS IT GOES BACK WHEN I FIRST STARTED TO TIE FLIES IN THE LATE 60'S. I JUST DON'T LIKE TO WRAP WEIGHT ON MY FLIES I WOULD RATHER ADD SOME TO THE LEADER. IT GIVES THE FLY MORE ACTION WITHOUT THE WEIGHT. I GUESS WHAT EVER ANYONE LIKES. THE TIME THAT I MAY PUT WEIGHT IN A FLY PATTERN IS WHEN I GO STEELHEAD FISHING IN NEW YORK TO GET THE FLY DOWN WHERE THE FISH ARE.
  14. I DIDN'T TOTALLY COME UP WITH THE PATTERN OF THE HELLGRAMITE. I SAW A MAN TYING SOMETHING VERY SIMILAR AT A SALTWATER FISHING SHOW ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF MARYLAND. I TOOK THE IDEA AND MADE SOME CHANGES. I ALSO HAVE TIED IT WITH SOME IDEAS I HAVE GOTTEN FROM THE DELAWARE HELLGRAMITE THAT WAS IN ONE OF THE FLY FISHING MAGAZINE A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK. FOR THE LEGS TO COME OUT OF THE SIDE TIE IN TWO OR THREE HEN HACKLES WITH THE TIP ON TOP OF THE HOOK AT THE BEND AND FOLD THE HACKLE OVER TOWARDS THE EYE AND TAKE EVER 6 OR SO FIBER AND SEPARATE THEM WITH TYING THREAD THEN WRAP THE CRYSTALL CHENILLE BETWEEN THE FIBERS AND KEEP DOING THIS TO THE EYE OF THE HOOK. THEN TRIM THE HACKLE IN A V SHAPE KIND OF LONG NEAR THE EYE OF THE HOOK AND SHORTER TOWARDS THE BEND. YOU ALSO CAN USE GOOSE BIOTS FOR LEGS. THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE TO THE FLY. ALSO THE IDEA OF CRYSTAL CHENILLE CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO THE DELWARE HELLGRAMITE PATTERN. I AM GOING TO TRY THIS PATTERN IN A SIZE 10 FOR TROUT.
  15. I used a bait hooks I bought at Wal-Mart size 1/0 gold plated. I put the hook into the jaws and started with black tying thread your choice of manufacturer. Then I took a piece of think cardboard like you get that come with a new dress shirt. Cut the paper into the shape to match the hook size. Then fasten the paper to the hook as tight as posible without bending the side in. Then take 2 part epoxy and cover the paper top and bottom let dry. This is to water proof the paper. You can make several of these at one time. Then take black crystal chenille and attach to the bend of the hook. Take a piece of leather (Brown or Black) I got mine from a person who worked in a shop that made leather jackets but I beleive you can used the leather they sell in fly shops. If you have to dye it. Then I toke the leather and cut it about an 3/8 inch wide strip and the length of the hook.. Slightly taper at each end. Cut a small V in both end of the leather. Tie in one end of the leather at the bend of the hook. Take the Crystal chenille and wrap it to about an 1/8 of an inch from the eye of the hook. Wrap the thread back to the bend of the hook. Bring the leather foreward and wrap the thread over the leather to create segments. Creating the segment close to the bend close together and wider as you go toward the eye. Tye in some rubber feeler and the Hellgramite is done. Then coat the piece of leather only with Daves Flex cement several times. This helps to protect the leather from getting wet. You can also tie in legs all the way from the bend of the hook if you chose. I wanted sometime simple. I am working on a crawfish pattern with leather but I don't have one that I was happy with. I hope this makes sense.
  16. The hooks I used for the Malt was a Mustad 3366 2/0. The other flies I used Tiemco hooks. TMC 800B 1/0, TMC800B 6, For the yellow perch I used a tiemco TMC 411S size 8.
