  1. Since i have noticed that we have some people that are "new" to tying i thought it would be a good idea to give some advice on tying instructional books. Nothing can beat somone showing a begginer first hand but if you dont have access to an experienced tyer to show you the ropes here's the book i first read when i strted out. Fly Tying 101 a classroom appoach by Chuck Fothergill. This is a 105page book that shows step by step some of the most common flies that you will want to know. It also has a entire chapter devoted to each part of a fly....wings,thorax,body,tail,etc...... It is a very good book for the starting tyer and also good for experienced tyers as a refresher in the basics. Everyone fell free to add to the list SD
  2. Dornug 2 or 3 days before a trip ....thats still "ahead" of time for me i'm usally up till 3am tying the night before a trip
  3. Well Dfix i cant comment on salt rods but i do have a few different 8wts so i can give you my opinion on them. My favorite goto 8wt is a sage VPS it has a fast tip action and has great backbone for turning big fish. I have landed salmon close to 30# on it and the rod has a great feel when fighting the big boys plus it is a pretty light rod for a 8wt. Another 8wt i have is a scott SA 10ft...it is also a fast action rod but to me it doesnt seem to be quite as "crisp" as my sage. It is also a "little" bit heavier and after 10-14 hours of casting for salmon i can feel it in my arm My other 8wt is a diamondback 9ft(cant think of the exact model) but it is a "saltwater" rod. It has a slightly slower action than the other 2 rods and has a "bit" more mid flex. It is easier to cast the large flies and indicators that i use for steel/salmon with this rod but i really do like my sage VPS the best out of all 3. Not sure if i gave ya anything helpfull but thats the 8wts i have and my opinions on them. SD

Well not sure how the comment was meant,i think it was posted more in a light hearted manner than to be taken seriously but Dfix and BDH spoke some very true words in the previous replys. Like Chris said the friendly banter that takes place on this forum is not only normal for a group of guys but also welcomed by all. It makes the forum a bit more enjoyable to everyone, but let's make sure we make the intent known with a little or just so no one takes something the wrong way. The "freedom" of this site is what makes it great and i think we all want to keep it that way. SD P.S BDH you changed your reply a few post up didnt ya i know it said suter not cuter last night!!!!
