  1. Now this is what I was trying to show! Thanks again.
  2. Yeah, it's the proportions drawing I think you posted and I couldn't save it as a .txt so I used .rtf and it used Word to save it. The .webp file is the one I wanted to post last night. Update: Okay, that was it. I just posted a .jpg file that I didn't want to post so I deleted it. It looked good so now I know what to do. Thanks for your help flytire!
  3. From files on my desktop. The first file was a .webp file and the second was a .rtf file. If only .jpg files are allowed that would explain it. I'll find a .jpg and try it.
  4. Yesterday I got a Download Completed message. This morning I'm getting a Potential Security Risk message. ???
  5. I tried that last night and it didn't work. Maybe some maintenance was in progress. I'll try again. Thanks! OF-914560-0000_500x.webp
  6. From the clipboard first and that didn't work. So I placed it on my computer and tried to upload it. I suppose it's okay to create a test post in the Beginner's Corner forum to see if I can figure it out. Let me know if I shouldn't please.
  7. I had trouble last night embedding a picture into a post. The progress circle just kept spinning. I assume the problem was me. Are there instructions?
  8. Do these instructions still work or do they need to be updated?
  9. As far as weight you can always place a weight on the pedestal to make it even more stable. I put a cylindrical piece of steel on my pedestal that brings it up to about 5 pounds. It's plenty stable. And at a little over 2 pounds it was stable enough before I added the weight but I was aware of its lack of mass. I just had the weight in my workshop and it was easy/convenient to set it on the flat base. And it's not in the way at all. I cut down a refrigerator magnet to fit the top of the weight and use it to hold extra hooks waiting to be tied. As far as fitting your vise the hole in the pedestal base usually fits the vertical shaft on 8-10 mm AND 3/8" vises. The screw coming in from the side clamps the shaft in the hole. Yeah, make sure it fits but I'd be surprised if you find a pedestal base that won't fit. My pedestal base is a Sunrise brand made in India and fits my original Indian made Sunrise Master Vise and 3 American made Thompson vises fine.
  10. Yeah, and most of the time it beats the alternative. I started a thread on my back surgery due to arthritis (and I have arthritis in several other places). Seven and a half weeks after my surgery I'm so glad I had it done. Carpal tunnel? That's another matter that after 45 years at the keyboard I was lucky enough to never encounter. Good luck to you Gene!
  11. This convinced me that a fly tying station would never be enough: https://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?/topic/109799-how-many-spools/ I use 2 plastic storage boxes so far and I'll soon outgrow those. I have some Plano organizer boxes in a larger box and a Fenwick tackle box for my tools. I have a drawing board with a piece of felt on it with my vise on a pedestal base and a couple of old desk lamps where I tie. Later I may make a couple of modular type organizers that will be simple and easy to make with a block of wood, some dowels, and a drill; one for threads and one for tools. For use I set things up on the dining table. It's an easy set up to take down and get out of the way for Sunday dinners. I'm keeping it simple. https://www.jsflyfishing.com/products/flat-pedestal-base
  12. I prefer to save a lot of money! Thanks for the link.
  13. I hate to ask but instead of me hunting for one and finding out it's not so good then trying again, can someone save me some time and point me to a source for a good one please? Or when they say Matarelli style do they really mean one made by Matarelli? Looks like the ones made by Matarelli are going for $80 to $110!?!?!? Never mind the original ones. Thanks.
  14. More replies than I expected! Thanks. I use my fingers but it's more because the whip finisher included with my Cabela's Deluxe Fly Tying Kit I bought many years ago came with a Sunrise Whip Finisher and it's really different from a Matarelli. I should get a Matarelli style whip finisher and only use my hands as a backup. My hands are too rough most of the time.
  15. Just wondering, which way do you prefer? Thanks!
  16. I have been warned! Thanks. I have also been warned about VAD (Vise Acquisition Disorder). I'm up to 4 now. Give me a year and either I'll be in interventions or 12-step programs. Oh, and thanks gadabout. I'm trying my best to have fun.
  17. After lots of reading, lots of videos, and lots of questions here (sorry guys!) I finally placed a couple of online orders for what I need to finally get started on tying some panfish flies. Along the way I also picked up a few old Thompson vises that should be fun to use. And now that Easter is over, much to my wife's dismay I have temporarily set up my tying area on the end of the dining table. I'll move to the basement pretty soon. I'll just concentrate on the basics and getting good at 3 patterns. Sounds like a plan to me! Thanks all!
  18. I'm watching this thread because of the availability of coyotes. I figure coyote fur would work too. We can harvest an unlimited number of coyotes every day of the year, day or night. Yep, that's certainly a beautiful pelt.
  19. The saving grace for my surgery was the lack of pain. I got my restrictions lifted Monday and have been living life as normally as I can since then per doctor's orders. It's amazing how tight and stiff my muscles and joints are but they're loosening up more every day. (I can tie my shoes now.) I'm also getting more control of my legs and I'm able to take walks with a cane around our property with my dog. <Heaven!> Life and recent retirement are becoming fun. I'm definitely on the mend. :D
  20. Sorry. I'm just wondering what he meant. I know I can use more or less of the wrong stuff to approximate the right stuff but I don't know what the right stuff is in the Skip Morris book. And as I get experience I'll be able to adapt better. Yeah, "wrapped around the axle". I liked that too. :D
  21. I asked above but maybe it was missed. Have any of you used that Thompson Jiffy bobbin? I wonder if they come up on that auction site very often. Are they any good?
