  1. It's a bit of a lousy shot,but: Sulphernut
  2. I started at 12 ,and one look at my "area" in the basement, and you can tell!!! Welcome,fryfish...You have embarked on an amazing journey!! Now,more than ever,it's important to "Save your Money"!!
  3. jmkratt.....I think it's almost certain that your problem was caused by the type of dispenser you were using, and NOT the quality of the "glue" itself. I am sure there are scads of folks out there who can get one of these double tubed things to dispense and equal amount of resin and hardener,I'm just not one of them!!! Sulphernut\ PS: If you can't find Z-Poxy in SEPARATE containers at you local flyshop, you oftentimes CAN find Dev-Con clear 5minute epoxy in similar packaging at a hardware store!
  4. That's amazing!! A dunking like that is almost ALWAYS universally fatal,to 1. Cell Phones, and 2. Digital Cameras (one reason I am scared to DEATH to take my camera fishing!!) Keep a close eye on it though...I have heard of these things drying out,and coming back to life as you have described, only to give up the ghost permanently within another couple of days!! Glad to hear you were out getting wet tho' !!! Sulphernut
  5. After tying for years with a C-clamp,I switched over to pedestal and then tyed for years with that. For most of that time,I was tying strictly trout flies, and the pedestal was plenty sturdy. In the past several years though,I have moved into saltwater and bass (spun deer hair) and found that stability was becoming an issue. (You see,I lash stuff onto hooks as though it has to survive ANYTHING!) So a couple of weeks ago,I was at the FF Show in Somerset NJ. and happened upon a vendor who had instock,so I could actually SEE it,a C-clamp and extender bar for my vice. ( I use a DK Barracuda) I had been planning on switching to this setup, but really wanted to see it,before I bought it. Well, needless to say,I came,I saw,I bought! I am quite happy with the extender,'cause as I advance in age,so does the arthritis in my neck! There is however a small tradeoff here....While the vise is closer, your materials and tools are farther away! I find myself with more and more stuff on my lap! This is not a bad thing though...There is no better place to align six or eight large hackle feathers for say a deceiver wing,or bass bug tail, than on your leg.I do however, like the stability...One can really haul away, with no movement whatsoever! I guess, you pays your money, and takes your choce! Sulphernut (ERIC)
  6. I don't beleive I've ever seen raffia in that color...Those wings are truly beautiful!! Sulphernut
  7. You must be VERY careful when using thinning agents that were not recommended by the manufacturer!! I have already ruined entire bottles of cement by adding the wrong thinner!! Most often, they would just congeal into a gloppy mess, that looked like something out of a movie special effects department!! If you can get away with it,I would recommend pouring a bit into a small container, and adding a bit of what you are going to use to thin it....LET IT SIT for awhile, before deciding you are OK...I seem to remember that when I had my bad experiences,at least one of the times,I thought I was OK...dropped in the thinner, shook well, and everything seemed ok...came back to use the stuff, and it had been rendered useless,as described earlier...It took a bit of time for the "adverse"reaction to take place. I recently did have some success with using acetone,on a product by Wapsi, called "Gloss-Cote". I have also read on this forum,of some guys using Toluene to thin Dave's Flex-Cement. This is very good news for me,cause I use Flex-cement more than any other type of cement, and the nearest fly shop in my area is over an hour away!! (a LONG way to go for a bottle of thinner!!) Toluene on the other hand,is available a most any well stocked paint supply shop, for a few bucks per quart!! Sulphernut
  8. Hey c-head!! A fellow Pennsylvanian here! I would have never thought to look for books at all,let alone FISHING related books,at Ollies. This is probably 'cause I've never been in one!! LOL! This is a problem I plan to rectify SOON!! The guy that started this thread,is actually a neighbor of mine, here in the Lehigh Valley. We've been talking about possibly getting out to your neck of the woods for a day trip at some point this year. ( I haven't fished out there for over 20 years...shame on me!) I (we) will probably hit you up latr on,for some local advice,so to speak! ( That is,if we can tear ourselves away from the great water we have all around us here, most of which is 15-20 minutes away from home!!) Sulphernut
  9. I was not aware that the 'kill HAD a fishable shad run!!....?? Sulphernut
  10. M-dog!! I think Feather-Craft Fly Fishing sells these feathers in bulk, which is the cheapest way to buy them. This is provided of course, that you have other uses for them, besides Zoo Cougars!! As I have posted here before, after obtaining an ounce or two of feathers,I would wash, dry and sort them,so that when I went to my "stash" I would be assured of coming up with a usable feather....no digging around required!!! Eric
  11. OK,The moderators will probably wind up moving this one, cause it isn't stricktly a tying query, per se. There is a long story that explains why I'm posting here, but I won't bore you with it at this time! Very simply,I am looking to here from anyone, regarding ANYTHING to do with catching the American Shad on a fly rod!! Tackle or fly preferences, tactics, etc. Eric
  12. Like Chase Creek,I too have tried for years to tie keeping the scissors in-hand,and have not been able to get used to it! I am rather "ham-handed" as well, and also find that it raises hell with my bobbin control. Anyone else care to weigh-in on this?? Sulphernut
  13. Hey 2 fingerz!! I was at the Fly Fishing show in Somerset NJ on Jan. 27th...I went specifically to find, and purchase a TFO #10 weight fly rod, which I did. Cost: $275.00,with case....Went materials shopping after that, and dropped another $250.00!!! This is surely a form of madness!!! EOM
  14. Agreed!!! That's gotta be E-Z body tubing,or Corsair!! Available at most "full-service" fly shops!
  15. To all reading this thread: There is a tool out there by the "Stonefly" tool Co...It is described in catologs as a holder for a razor blade. What I have not been able to find out,is what kind of blade will it hold (single or double edge) It appears from the photo's I've seen, that it holds the blade in a slightly curved position,so one would think it is a double edged blade,as a single edge has a "bolster" on the non-business edge. Anyone ever seen,or used one of these?? Sulphernut
  16. JS....You might want to try size "A" rod wrapping thread for spinning hair...I have had excellent results with this! I got this recommendation from an instructional video by Jimmy Nix, called, aptly enough "Tying Bass Flies with Jimmy Nix". This is still widely available on VHS,and if you look around enough,on DVD. This tape taught me more about working with deer hair in 90 minutes, than I was able to learn on my own in close to 30 years of trial and error! I highly recommend it! Sulphernut
  17. Hey Newfie! You want to get a better measure of how talented Prince is? Look around on the web for a bio,and check out the tunes he's written for other people. You will be,as I was, quite surprized. My brother and I both agreed that this was, with the exception of Sir Paul McCartney, the best 1/2 time show in many a year!! With regard to how many instruments he can play,my brother just happened to mention that to me on Sunday. My brother being the most accomplished, and knowledgable muscian that I know,I would say that this one is true!!!
  18. Stealthson....I agree that these feathers should not be used, sold, traded,or otherwise trafficked in. Bet you wish you would have skinned the thing, processed the feathers, and stashed them away under a loose floorboard somewhere!! Seriously, I have read quite a bit about how seriously the "feather-police" take their job,and ALL accounts agree, that they DO NOT F**K AROUND!! There really is no feather that I can think of that would be worth a stiff fine, let alone possible time in the cooler! I once found a pretty little hawk of unknown species, which apparently flew into a window, and was killed.I called a local taxidermist, thinking of just getting the thing mounted, cause it was such a swell looking bird. He told me in no uncertain terms, that he would not even entertain such an idea. THAT was my introductiuon to what often seems like the wacky world of "governed" fur and feathers. Here's is something I've been wondering...What if you inheirit (SP?) a now illegal feather, from someone that owned it when it WAS legal...are you now in violation simply posessing the "contraband" feather. Any takers on that one!!...???
  19. Have you ever obtained any material from this place??? It appears that they have pretty decent bulk pricing,IF the material is of decent quality.
  20. I like Z-Poxy....ALL epoxy seems to yellow over time tho' I have some surf candies I tied up about 7 years ago, using Z-poxy,and when i looked at them the other day, they were still gin-clear!!
  21. Hello Conehead, and Mrs.Conehead....I am at work, and therefore must be brief. I can olny begin to imagine the mood in your home,in the face of such news. My wife and I both turned fifty this past year, and have this on our horizon. I want you to tell your wife to take heart in this though: Just two or three nights ago,on World News Tonight, there was a piece on how fatalities from all cancers are on the decline for the first time in history....PARTICULARLY colon cancer!!!! They attribute this mostly,to early detection. It is my sincere hope that your wife is VERY early, and has the best of possible outcomes! I,m sure I can safely speak ffor everyone on this forum, when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with you both! E.O. Mendsen....AKA Sulphernut!
  22. By "Plasti-Dip,I assume you are talking about the stuff available from hardware stores, used to plastic coat tool handles, and the like?? By the by steelie, that is one sharp lookin' popper!!!
  23. It would seem that there are a pretty large number of teen-agers using the forum!!! This is really refreshing!!! I wonder if it would be considered an invasion of privacy,if the modrators could publish a "mean-age" profile of the entire membership...Or is this already out there somewhere?? Sulphernut
  24. I have had excellent results using a pattern that is essentially a poly wing spinner, but substituting the poly with a tuft of CDC fibers.
