Tungsten Beads...Looking for feedback

Recommended Posts

One thing I have noticed that most retailers charge the same for beads no matter the size or the finish. From the manufacturers I have spoken with the cost varies greatly depending on the size and the finish. For example 3/16 sized beads are over twice as expensive as 1/16 to manufacturer and gold is more expensive than the other finishes. So, paying a single price across the board doesn't seem quite fair and I will try to base my prices on the cost.

thats fine but dont price yourself out of the market

I'm looking for some feedback on tungsten beads and hoping you guys can help.

As you guys know I have been slowly introducing my own products. I have fly boxes, scissors and hooks. This year I am looking into a line of tungsten beads. For it to be feasible for me I would probably have to sell them as either 50 or 100 packs but I believe I can offer them at a fraction of the cost of what it cost for tungsten beads elsewhere.

So, I have a few questions.

1. Do you use enough tungsten beads to justify buying a 50 or 100 pack if they were reasonably priced?

2. Do you have a preference on color; brass, copper, etc?

3. Is there are particular size of bead that you use more often?

4. What would you pay for a 50 or 100 pack?

Thanks for all of the help. If I get some positive feedback I hope to get things into production within the next month or so.

1. Yes a 50 or 100 pack would be great.

2. Brass and black/gunmetal.

3. 3/32, 1/8, 3/16

4. $8 per 50

1. Yes

2. Black, gold, copper, and other painted colors(chartreuse, pink, white)

3. 1.5mm-4.5mm

4. I can get them now at $12/100 for most colors and sizes from a site in Arkansas, but if you offer at somewhat close, I'll switch suppliers.

I typically only use tungsten on small flies where lead wraps don't make sense. 1.5mm and 2mm. Otherwise lead and regular beads seems satisfactory for me. I like black and copper.

2. Do you have a preference on color; brass, copper, etc? Yes, though the preference varies with the pattern. I like the gold, matte black, rainbow, and various "hot spot" colors (as I feature in my YouTube videos)

3. Is there are particular size of bead that you use more often? I tie mainly trout flies, thus would prefer those for hooks sizes 8 to 18; this would also include cone heads.

Thanks for all of the help. If I get some positive feedback I hope to get things into production within the next month or so.

I cannot agree with this enough; I believe a lot of people get into fly tying markets and keep their margins so small that they get priced-out. Ensure that you can turn a profit; if not, the business isn't for you.
