mikechell 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2014 Speaking of buying waders. I was at the local Bass Pro Shop yesterday (South of Chicago). They've got $119.00 boot footed waders on sale for $69.00. They also have sticking footed (you need boots that fit over them) for $59.00.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2014 Most 5wt. rods with a doublehaul and good timing will lay out a full line. More importantly, most 5wt. rods will work the water in front of you and out to 40' or so very well. Flyrods are generally rated to a line based on the first 30' of a taper, which is where the line weight is measured. Add the length of the rod, the length of a leader and tippet, and you're working a rod at it's mfg'er rated sweet spot when you're in that 35' to 45' area. That's much more important that how far the rod can reach out in 90% of actual fishing situations.
phg 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2014 Steve Rajeff casts a 9' 5wt 120'+ with regularity. Just saying.... Most of the fish you will catch will be between 30' and 50'. Work on accuracy and control at those distances.
