Three Suggested Flies for Rainbow Trout....

Recommended Posts

Been having fun fishing for Trout but warm weather is around the corner or already here. Shifting focus to warm water fishing. Started things off with fishing a local pond yesterday... lost count but caught 15+ Bass in an hour. No Bruisers but still fun stuff… Daylight Savings Time rocks! Near Deere in Maris Gras colors and Pink worked well! Yesterday's video.

Had a request from a Reader asking us about fly fishing presentations we use. Put clips together from trips to the Blue, Lower Mountain Fork, Turner Falls, and Possum Kingdom. May be of interest to others come this Trout Stocking Season! Fly Fishing Presentations.

Of note in the video is the Near Deere was used most of the time. Followed by Tandem Rigs using a Near Deere and a Zebra Midge. In the case where we fished the Lower Mountain Fork we used a Tandem Rig with the leading Near Deere and a trailing GRHEN, Y2K, or Rainbow Warrior.

I watch these videos, and am even more convinced that fishing for trout is no different than fishing for sunfish. It's just as easy to catch small and medium sized trout as it is medium and small sized sunfish. The big ones, in both species, are much harder to fool.

Nice clarity on your videos. That's some beautiful water you're fishing.

Thanks mikechell! Really like the area; just lately been having to work more than fish... bummer!

Did get the afternoon's video posted from Saturday. Here it is: LMF Part 2.

Made it to Oklahoma's Lower Illinois River for some trout fishing! Tough go but did manage to catch a couple of trout for dinner. Liking this year-round trout fishery just north across the Texas/Oklahoma border! Guess what... Hooked two with an Olive Near Deere and one with a Y2K trailing fly... lead fly was a Pink Near Deere!

Decided to check out a pond recently stocked on Wednesday with Rainbow Trout. Struck out on trout but did get several little crappie and a bluegill! Overall, had a fun time getting out on a chilly but nice day. Today's Video. Used the Near Deere as well as a Tandem Rigged Near Deere and GRHEN to catch them.

Fighting a cold here; hate it knowing that trout are biting in our area - North Texas and Oklahoma. To make matters worse, our friend in Australia sent a couple of reports of trout biting in Oz! Even sent pics; added them the bulletin board ...Post.

He has been using the Olive Near Deere we sent him several weeks ago. So far, he is having the same issue we had while fishing the Blue River... trout follow but turn away. Luckily, it happened to other fishing flies in the fly box, too. Sounded like deja vu from our last trip to the Blue!

Question from a Reader of our Blog asked, "What fishing flies have we been using to fish for Trout this Season?" In hopes of answering his question, decided to post an article, Three Suggested Fishing Flies for Rainbow Trout. Hope others find it useful, too. It includes details on how we tie the fishing flies... easy to tie, easy to fish...!

Local ponds we fish seem to be wanting a Griffith's Gnat. Have tried the three suggested fishing flies but it seems in at least two of the ponds, the Griffith's Gnat is the fly of choice. As it turned out, ran out of them; lost them to tree snags while casting - lots of trees around the pond we fished this morning.

A quick look at the fly box turned up a PMC Emerger Variant that we have used with success in other places. Tied one on and was able to get three more trout to make a limit.

Trout were moving about and feeding on the surface this morning. After working different parts of the pond, settled in on the "point" and was able to sight cast to passing schools.
Since the action shots were cut short when we ran out of battery, did add pictures on how we tie the PMC Emerger Variant for anyone interested in tying their own. Simple fly, simple tie! Video Post.
