I was given one of those things a few years ago and gave it back could not figure out how or why to use it. Does any one know what it is?

It's a standard hands-free (somewhat) laboratory or manufacturing or shop or whereverthehellyousityourasstodoinspectionofpieceparts magnifier, easily purchased in many tool catalogs and outlet sites. Probably a 3, 4 or 5X magnifier.

 

It is not a vise.

It is used for soldering electronics. I have one I picked it up at Radio Shack for 5.99 or something like that. I'm sure you can find other uses. I don't use it much, soldering is a dying art. Electronics pretty much come in plug in parts.

I seen them at gabralter trade center for about 6 bucks. They had a 2x magnifier. If it wasn't for the two good roach clips it would be a total waste.
