  1. You're on fire Cody some kick ass tying mate :headbang:
  2. Nice flies Cody Love the long rubber legs on this one, it should give the fly a lot of movement and animation in swift water, very cool. I tie some nondescript tungsten bombs that employ super long/thin rubber legs and tails, the longer the better
  3. Nice set of flies Terje, keep em coming buddy
  4. Nice set of flies Cody  That was quick!
  5. It's been a great experience hosting my first swap guys. Thanks for being part of it Here are some pic's of what to expect - they'll be in the mail tomorrow morning
  6. Hi All, Received the final two sets of flies today, well worth the wait, some beautiful ties by both atroutbum2 and Student4evr. Thanks for the extras This is going to make a fine set of flies  Sorry I won't get a chance to mail them tomorrow 7th. I will have everyones flies off to the mail the following day on the 8th. Thanks again for being part of the swap and all the effort you've gone to, it's made my first swap a great experience. Karsten
  7. Come on Dave, You're in Australia mate, possum capital of the world and you're asking about substitutes? What's wrong with the real deal :j_k: Jokes aside, Flytire is on the money as far as dry fly dubbing/body materials go. The only problem is you're after a possum sub and it's called for in a lot of Tassie patterns. Possum fur is quite coarse and crinkly depending on where it's from on the skin. Seals fur is similar but even coarser and shinier, if you've got seals fur subs they could work. If you asked earlier and I would have mailed some to you, it's probably a bit late for your upcoming trip?
  8. Thanks for hosting troutguy and allowing me to take part I forgot to add I will be attempting a 'Queen of Waters' dedicated to Elsie Darby. I'll be tying a rendition as described by her. Sounds scary but I am looking forward to it :yahoo:
  9. I absolutely love the look of traditional catskill flies, but I've never tied one. If your willing to take on an enthusiastic Aussie, I'd love to play?
  10. Nice rodbusters Matt24! The olive ones look great, you might want to leave the 3wt at home
  11. Superb ties Carl, I love your flies. It's cool that you've incorporate eyes but somehow managed to maintain that traditional soft hackle look. Kudos buddy
  12. Gorgeous ties as always Terje, a beautiful triptych my friend The middle fly is my favourite. I like the hot glue idea, I've seen it used to form a wing case on emergers/nymphs. In this case is it flattening the poly post back towards the tent wing or is it added security for the hackle?
  13. WOW!!! I'm gobsmacked, your crankin out some awesome looking ties buddy. I was tying for quite a while before mine started looking anywhere near that good. Keep up the good work and don't be afraid to add them to the database, they're more than good enough. I know what you mean by saying you're a perfectionist, I suffer the same affliction and it's held me back sometimes. I am glad you decided to bite the bullet and share your story/flies with everyone. You've landed in the right place on this forum, it's the best network/community I've found. I am sorry to hear your vise is out of commission for a while and I'm going to try to solve that issue as soon as I can. I'm waiting on a reply email from someone and if everything goes smoothly I'll have a good quality vise to you shortly. I'll keep you posted on that front, if you could PM me your postal details that would be great. My Best Karsten
  14. Hi Cody, Glad you like the idea's, the wing I was thinking of was synthetic like the poly you used. I would tie it the same way you are thinking of with the deer hair, kind of like a sparse/shorter version of a elk hair caddis wing. If I get a chance I'll try it out myself and add some pic's, if that's cool with you? I don't want to hijack your thread just thought it might be cool to keep it going and bounce idea's off each other? Keep the patterns coming mate
  15. Hullo swapgang We're still waiting on two sets that should be close now. I'll keep everyone posted, I hope you're all cool with waiting until we have a complete set? Dave I know you need yours in time for your Tassie adventure, let me know how long I've got to get them to you? If they don't make it in time I'll send you the flies I have received before you head off. The remainder will have to follow, but hopefully they'll get here on time mate.
  16. Hey Cody, Good to see you back buddy Very cool looking thorax duns, sounds like they've been producing well for you. I don't know about improving them but there are plenty of variations and ideas kicking around. I've seen AK best incorporate a sparse, spread/fanned out tail over the trailing shuck to add floatation. I think a slanted/45° wing could look good, possibly tied in front of the hackle with the stubs left to form a head or folded back to form a more pronounced bullet shaped head. Just a bit of food for thought, they look fine the way they are and are obviously working
  17. I thought you might still be buried in the carpet mate, in the in search of the escapee.
  18. Received 2 cool looking sets of flies yesterday from Fishingbobnelson and JohnP. Thanks for the extras guys and for being in my first swap With Student4evr's flies on the way we're only waiting on one additional set to complete the swap.
  19. Thanks for the heads up John and Bob. I'll keep you posted as to when your flies arrive. Thanks for taking part in my first swap. Karsten
  20. Thanks for the heads up JohnP, don't stress you've got plenty of time. Karsten
  21. Hi Big J, Good materials/hackle always help, get the best you can, it doe's make a difference. If you can get someone to show you/teach you, all the better. Start with basic patterns, I used to practice hackling an entire hook when I started. Wrap an even thread base onto the shank of a hook from the eye to the hook point, tie in the hackle and try to wind touching turns to the eye covering the whole shank. If you're not happy with it razor blade it and try again. A good reference book is also a great help and I can think of none better than Charlie Cravens book. It's the most involved thorough how to book with no skipped steps, followed up with great clear photography. Covers everything that matters including Parachute, Palmer and Standard dry fly hackling. The title is a little deceptive as there's a lot to be learnt even by advanced tiers, worth every cent. Link to a review on Charlie Cravens book You can buy it on the hatchesmagazine shop Here's the link charlie craven's basic flytying Hope that helps buddy, keep trying you'll get there
  22. Gorgeous flies Ray, love the combo, exquisite tying as always  I think the trout is looking a little worse for wear, might be a bit late for a successful release mate
  23. Simply gorgeous set of flies made the swim across the pond. Rockworm your flies are safe and sound, thanks for the extras, they're beautiful
  24. Received a nice set of flies from Li'lDave. Thanks for the extra saltwater flies buddy, look forward to harassing some local bream with them  It's hard to believe your new at this small freshwater flies caper, keep it up and you'll be tying like a pro in no time
