  1. Interesting thread. I find so much good info on the web that I haven't bought a mag in quite a while. I figure I can learn more about tying on sites like this than I can from mags. I have a backlog of printed fly recipies about 2 inches thick sitting on my bench right now waiting to be attempted. What do I need a magazine for? I've been spending my mag money on materials. I honestly don't know if I will ever buy another fishing or tying mag. Fly tying info on the web is the way to go. More good info on this site right now than you could get in 10 years worth of tying mags.
  2. Just my opinion, but I would always use the Borax. helps the skin dry faster and will kill any insect larva. A duck you will have to scrape, then cover with Borax, then remove Borax and scrape, Borax again, and then scrape again. Then cover with borax and let dry. A chicken is easier as you just remove the skin and then Borax. No scraping required. Always change the Borax every couple of days. On a duck don't forget to match the wing quills.
  3. On birds I use Borax. 20 Mule Team Borax. In the dish detergent section of your local supermarket.
  4. Sorry I didn't mean to imply that anyone needs "lessons" or can't already tie. I signed up for the "lessons" after 15 years on a Renzetti Traveler . I was amazed at just how seldom in my everyday tying I really used the rotary feature of my vise. Now after watching a whole bunch of videos by a top notch tyer using his rotary feature to its full extent I have really started to get the full benifit of my amazing vise. Just trying to pass on what I feel is a very useful resource and a damn fine site.
  5. I'm surprised that you are so dead set against a rotary. My advise to people asking me this question has been get a rotary vise and sign up for Rotary Tying for a month or two. Figure the cost of the site into the price of your vise. I am not trying to advertise here. I just feel that this is a great site and a must for any beggining rotary tyer.
  6. Interesting. Nobody besides me bends the barbs in the vice?
  7. Great use of groundhog for flies is to sub the guardhairs for elk inna Elk Hair Caddis.
  8. Hey Tuna thats where I got my info too! Great book.
  9. Ya gotta scrape off the fat from the skin, and then treat with Borax and salt. I do it this way: Nail it to a board, and scrape off all the fat you can. Cover the entire skin with a layer of Borax. Let sit a day or two and then remove the borax and scrape the skin again getting off more fat. Cover with salt and borax. Repeat this until the pelt is dry and stiff. If you notice any fat scrape again. Usually takes a couple of weeks and 4-5 scrapings. This method will give you a dry stiff pelt. I usually cut it into strips or squares and share with my buddies. Store with moth crystals in an airtight container. You could also tan the pelt but you will need advise from others on how to do that. Good luck. Groundhog is a great material.
  10. Here in Maine we have a little critter we call the black fly. And we have a saying "mosquitos suck, black flies bite!" Dirty little bastages take a chunk of you home for later. They b the reason I only tied 1/2 a dozen, well them and MGD.
  11. Yup it's a nice one. Deluxe model. Comes with 3 coolers, 2 for beverages and one to hold food. Got it it the North Maine Woods. Take my advice and get the optional bug zapper. I could have used that...
  12. I haven't fished it yet but this looks like a nice simple caddis pattern simple caddis
  13. My number one dryfly would have to be Nelson's Caddis. See the how to in the step by step forum. I luv that fly so much that I feel I have to spread the word! I mostly fish the Kennebec River in Maine which has some pretty amazing caddis hatches so I might be biased.
  14. Errr enough? Whats that mean? Wasn't it a Dead song that said "Too much of everything is just enough"?
  15. Always bend the barbs on every fly.
