  1. Hey yes! I have some of his stuff. It is hard to find in the shops because it had alot of trouble with quality about 6 or 8 years ago, but John has brought the quality up to a very high level in a very short time. He also has a very unique olive colour that you just have to see. I have been to his farm and bought his stuff from his inventory, but recently found some good deals in a local shop. His farm is about two hours south of me, so I stopped in one day to pick up some capes. I wrote a brief review for his website, you won't be disappointed by his feathers. Of course this is me promoting a Canadian grower, so I may be slightly biased......Kerry
  2. I've been tying for around 35 years, though I don't think you would ever know it by looking at what I turn out.....sigh I have a genetic disposition towards the ten thumbs on two hands.
  3. Mine is a 120 year old rolltop. It looks good, but really has no room for everything so I have to store the extra here in boxes I have made up.
  4. Hey why not take my place? I have no address to mail the flies to, I live in Canada as I mentioned in a previous post so I cannot send a self addressed stamped envelope and I have no deadline to have the swap finished by. Feel free to take my place.....Kerry
  5. When do you need them by? Where do I send them? I am in Canada, can I send you some $$ for postage? I will be tying the Double Bunny.....Kerry My e-mail is [email protected]
  6. They won't ship flammable liquids or compressed gas via mail, so you would have to get it delivered by courier....ouch!
  7. I went to the sellers rating page and e-mailed several people whom had posted that they had bought the vise etc. I asked them what they thought and had no bad comments. For what it is worth you might try the same thing....but all of the other points here are valid as well.
  8. Thanks guys! I never seem to have enough dubbing, but I think I will hold off on this stuff for now and look at other types.
  9. Normally I don't do swaps until Winter sets in, but I'll get in on this if it is okay. I know what I am tying, but have no name for it, will look it up in a bit. I have fished for Pike alot! Love the things. Are you still going to hold it if you don't get 12? Hope so....Kerry
  10. I have three children. All of them have tied a fly or two, both daughters and my son. They are old enough now to handle the tools etc themselves but of course they weren't always that way. First of all, most two year olds think "What is it and how can I destroy it!" They are just curious. We ourselves are slightly more mature two year olds....we are curious. It was unfair of me to try to get them into tying before they were ready. "Ready" is not really age specific, so it can happen any time. I have alot of books with pictures of flies and bugs. A little time with my little folks on my knee with a book sort of familiarized them with what I was doing. They also liked feathers, so I had a special feather I gave them when I was home and they were interested. This of course is not great when they were going through the "How does it taste" period, so perhaps a picture I could print off the internet would have been good, if I had been on it at the time. They can crumple all they want. The other thing I ended up doing, was tying after they went to bed. Again I am not the most patient person in the world when it comes to waiting to tie, but I found myself getting aggrevated too often and that was not fun for me or them. I spent time just answering questions and finding things for them to do that would take some of the mystery out of what I was doing. Less mystery, less curiousity....at least the invasive kind. I also came to realize that I had another 40 years of tying ahead of me, but only a few years with them as little critters, this helped me put my tying hobby in perspective. Now after the three have reached there older ages I am glad I did this. I have noted with each one, that they grow up quick and won't be around to bug me all too soon. This is just me, I know what you are going through and hope you can find a happy medium.
  11. Has anyone tried Quick Descent Dub? It is a spun aluminium dubbing that adds weight to the fly. I wonder if it is any more environmentally friendly than lead? Just wondering if any of you have experience with it?
  12. This is how I have to store my stuff. I am just about finished decorating the boxes to fit the rest of the room.
  13. My mom gave me this old roll-top quite a few years ago. The thing is over 100 years old. I know it is not the best tying desk in the world, but it is aesthetically pleasing and looks like something that should be tied at. I also am able to keep it up in the livingroom where I can sit with everyone else. I have my storage boxes decorated to match the livingroom decor, which is done in "Fishing." Yes my wife is a Saint!
  14. Excuse me for butting in, but I think, like other sites, you earn different levels of "Fishing titles" as you post. Thus newbies like us get the "Baitfisherman" title for awhile. I am pretty sure there is no offence intended. One one site I was a maggot, before I posted enough to be a errr, well something better than a maggot I think!
  15. Sure no problem. Actually if you want to send them direct you can do so through this site. www.castingforlife.com Or you can send them to me and I will put them with the next raffle box. I also have contributors send me their signatures on a piece of paper and I put them in a card that goes with the flies. The organization is headed by Lynda McLennan, who if anybody knows something of western Canadian Flyfishing, is the wife of Jim McLennan of Iron Blue Flyfishing. It is a worthwhile cause and I am very glad to know another person is helping out....Kerry
  16. Have you tried this on the Browns in the Cowichan River? When I was a kid, in the pre-flyfishing years, sometime after the Tyranosaurus and just before the invention of the wheel (the round version) I used whole baby crays for Browns there. I used to fish for perch under the Six Mile bridge as well. Of course I hung out all over that area, fishin' wastin my life away.....them were the days. The View Royal, Metchosin area were my home for a long time.
  17. When you do this again I will contribute! I am currently finishing up a similar fundraiser for the Canadian version, Casting for Life. Just waiting for the custom flybox in the mail hopefully on Monday....then God give me the strength to pass it on! I sure don't mind helping out with CFR as well!

Nice set-up! I have mine squirreled away in boxes etc. Scared to let the missus see what I actually have!
  19. Hi! I caught a link to the new magazine from the website I frequent and thus ended up here. I have been tying for about 32 years. This is not to say I am a good tyer, I have been pretty much self-taught. Initially because I knew only one other tyer who was alot older than me and did it for a living, so my parents wouldn't let me bother him. Later it was because I thought I knew everything and now when I have finally realized that I don't I am just stubborn and go my own way anyhow....but I am a little better at paying attention. I was raised on Vancouver Island, where I kept a flyrod in my locker at school. I had a study on both sides of lunch and if the fish were bighting and chemistry was next....well I left the Island in '80 and moved to Fort St John B.C. where I discovered Pike and Walleye and really big Grayling amogst other things. I also took time to marry the woman who bought me a graphite flyrod for the first Christmas after I met her. We have three children, one who is a teen and has officially disassociated herself from us....except on the 1st and the 15th which is kind of wierd, because it coincides with payda..... Hey you don't suppose???? I learned most of what I know about flyfishing when I was up there, though I am pretty much self-taught there as well, because I was one of the first few FFers to live up there. I have since found myself in the Edmonton, Alberta area. This is not by any means, prime fishing areas, but the Albertans are working hard at it and I am finding some areas that look promising. My passions are my family and tying. I hope I can contribute something here, I know I will learn more than I can give back and perhaps I will find a few folks I have lost track of over the last few years. Looking forward to being part of the group.....Kerry
