  1. Lol my wife always sees me eyeballing random things I think I could use for fly tying followed by " you don't need that"
  2. Yea I'm talking about upright wings for the most part, thanks for the replies so far!
  3. Any recommendations for synthetic dry fly wings? I see a lot of sheeting materials they sell now, Swiss straw, web wing Ect.. I'm interested in trying some out but need a good place to start.
  4. Looks good... But I'm never too hard on flies.
  5. Thanks for all the suggestions. I got some of the bulky nylon yesterday at Joan's in white so I can color it, seems to hold marker well. The floss you see at fabric stores is it just the regular embroidery floss and them you use the individual strands?
  6. Thanks for the ideas guys... Hey flytire, what's the durability like on using a peace of turkey or pheasant tail. I picture a fish teeth breaking pretty easy. I just got a spool of uni stretch to try.
  7. How do you create ribbing on your dry flies? Thread, floss? What are the best choices or even techniques to create nice ribbing on drys that won't put too much extra weight. I know some materials have a natural ribbing effect like biots and some quills...I'm thinking more along the line of synthetics.
  8. Peak is 150. For that price she will get an easy to use vise that will last her a life time, accommodate anything she grows into, and I think most importantly doesn't look intimidating. Wort case scenario you got an awesome vise to tie on
  9. I use marker hear and there to color different materials. Seems to be a popular trend. I notice that a lot of times despite being a permanet marker, it rubs right off. Any tips to help this stuff bond to materials. I Get coat with something but for a lot of patterns that isn't always feasible
  10. Hey hammer, great pattern. I have really been enjoying your videos, thanks for the frequent postings. Question for you on this one...you use Sally Hanson to help secure the ostrich. Do you think it would be better to use super glue instead? I typically use Super glue as an under coating to bind materials and Sally as an over coating to strengthen. Just curious on your thoughts
  11. I bought a couple of India rooster necks. I'm from the era of fly tying where genetic capes and saddles is all I know. I decided to purchase a few of these necks because they were cheap and graded as "prime". I picked them up in all the oddball colors that I don't have genetic capes in. I'm actually pleased with them. Sure they take two feathers for a nice hackle neck but they do work and with floatant they have done fine for me this year. My favorite use is using them a long with a genetic. I have some patterns I use a genetic grizzly and an olive India cape. Makes a nice color combo. I was just curious if anyone else dabbles in these any more?
  12. Hey great post. I have decided to buy my next hackles from him.
  13. Thank you! I got some streamer hooks to try. I am out so this is a perfect opportunity to try a new brand.
  14. I tie on a peak and love it. As far as true rotary it's solid. That was the one feature I was worried about on the vise before I bought it. I tie alot of small trout flies and was worried it would affect me when using rotary techniques. In my opinion it does not affect me at all. I don't even bother adjusting my hooks when putting them in the vise. I think you will see what I mean when you buy this vise!
  15. I will be looking for that stretch stuff
  16. That's sweet. Thanks for the updates
  17. Lol I love it man. I've been tying for a year and a half now and my collection has done the same as yours. Dry fly hackle, wet fly hackle, dubbing, furs, feathers. It's to the point that I try and beat my wife home from work so she doesn't see the packages on the porch! Lol it costs me twice as much because now when my wife shops she can use my " fly shop" in the basement against me.
  18. Yea I wondered if that might be the case. For the ten bucks I paid for a spool if 4lb and a spool of 2lb it's worth a try. I guess if I'm not happy ill just throw the line on my spin gear.
  19. I have been wanting to get into the fluorocarbon game and Other than noticing that fluorocarbon tippet manufactured for fly fishing has a higher breaking strength for the diameter...does it matter if you just purchase regular fluorcarbon fishing line and connect it to your mono leader. Essentially using it as tippet. The price difference between the two is huge and I have a feeling that this is another one of those things to catch fisherman. For five bucks you can get 100 yards of fishing line. Vs 15 bucks for 30 yards of fly fishing fluorocarbon tippet. I know which one I'm trying first. I'll be using it pretty much for nymphing only or dropping a wet of the back of a dry. What are yor thoughts or experiences with this?
  20. Lol good post. Hey I know this defeats the purpose of everything your doing but lay down a layer of black thread and leave tiny gaps between quill wraps...same effect
  21. Nice flys everyone. Sandfly what are you using for the wing pads on those. I have been using the fat end of a turkey biot and think it looks good but definetly like whatever your using better.
