  1. Hey thanks guys for the help. Tim I really enjoy your videos, thanks for the tutorials.
  2. I live in pa and was wondering what colors I should be using when tying grannom drys and pupa. It seems like the sources i look at vary. Some say dark olive, some black, some dark brown. It gots me a little confused. I want to tie a bunch for spring. Any favorite patterns/ colors to use?
  3. Nice I'm interested might give him a call tomorrow
  4. Man it's tough to decide. Might have to wait to get to a fly shop so I can check them out in person. Wish I had one closer!
  5. I'm looking for a good genetic hen cape for tying wet fles with. I have a partridge and starling skin already, now I want to stock up on some good quality hen capes for tying flies primarily in 12 to 18 range. I've been looking at whiting and keough hen capes. I don't mind spending twenty dollars on a whiting cape. I found the keough ones very reasonably priced in the six dollar range. What's your guys suggestions on good hen capes. Like I said these are primarily for hackling wet flies. The deal on the keough seems pretty unbeatable. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?adv=99656&pf_id=61YX&utm_campaign=bazaarvoice&utm_medium=SearchVoice&utm_source=RatingsAndReviews&utm_content=Default Any one any experience with these?
  6. Thanks a lot for the help guys. Great info
  7. I bought a partridge skin a while back I think from cabelas. I love the look of the feathers that it has to offer but a lot of the feathers seem too long for smaller size hooks. Is that common on a partridge skin? What is the typical length of the hackle collar on a wet fly? Is it the 1.5 to 2 times the hook gap like on drys?
  8. I'd say 5 to 10 mins. If I'm tying a continuous pattern and I lay the materials out for a few...if I'm messing around with a new pattern time can really fly!
  9. Every time I tie a fly I'm not happy with I always think..hey no one really knows what these fish see. Might look like prime rib to them...I throw it right into the old fly box
  10. utc is really nice for laying thread flat and making nice smooth bodies.
  11. I started tying with utc cause that is what was available to me but lately I have really been liking uni and have been slowly stocking my colors with that. It's definetly becoming my go to
  12. Ive been tossing around the idea of playing with some custom dubbing blends but just haven't gotten around to it. I too Ike the hare line plus.
  13. Just want to pitch that its my favorite squirrel dubbing I've come across yet. Super spikey. Makes great looking nymphs, stones, and I've even used it on some x caddis. Really like the stuff, highly recommend. What's your favorite spikey/ just plain buggy dubbing?
  14. Very interesting. Just looking at ties on google images most are measured right to the back of the body. I'm thinking that longer is better. I might start doing mine like yours
  15. When measuring the length of your caddis wing for elk hair and x caddis type patterns I have always seen and been taught to tie the wing in so it extends just past the end of the body. However looking at some pictures of real caddis, especially some on troutnut.com it seems the wings extend significantly past the body sometimes at least half a body length or more.... What's the correct length for a wing on caddis patterns in general? Does it vary by specie?
  16. Does the color of a caddis pupa translate into the color of the adult? So would an olive caddis pupa be an olive bodied adult? I've seen black caddis but never any pictures of black pupa
  17. I have the same problem just says something about uploading a video
  18. You can order some variety packs with different color half or quarter capes for reasonable. Then if you " out grow" them or use up all the good feathers you can move onto to buying full capes or saddles.
  19. Tried the graphic caddis last night...loved the way the ostrich herl looked wet.
  20. Like that one too...now if I could find some time to tie!
  21. Great videos Curtis and TC.. I've watched a lot of both your videos so keep them coming! I might give that one a go TC
  22. Lol I just had a conversation with my wife over the phone the other day that went something like this...." Hey honey I never thought I would be asking you this but when u stop at the store I'm going to need you to pick me up some nail polish...I prefer Sally Hansen.."
  23. Every now and then I sell some to friends or people I work with. People like to buy custom flies. I don't make a lot of money though I just sell for a dollar a fly no matter what it is. Only reason I do it is to remove some inventory so I have reason to tie more. Gives me a reason to revisit some old patterns too.
