  2. Swap flies my sons and I tied recently. Higa's SOS in black and olive, #18 & #20 respectively and Kelly Galloups zoo cougar. [/url]">http://
  3. My dyna king jaws are trashed and adjusting the collet is a pita. I just bought a regal medallion w/ss jaws and i am VERY happy with this vise.
  4. That's an awful lot a hook for trout. Looks like a ss saltwater hook.
  5. Nice tie Thurst! Helluva photo too. Did someone buy a new camera??
  6. I like it. Is there a reason the notch is off center?
  7. Good God thats a lot of thread. Thanks for sharing. Have you looked into Uni Tray's for wire, tinsel, or other ribbing storage storage?
  8. It went back. I tried. I really wanted to like this vise but its just not me. One obstacle that sealed it for me was the need for a half hitch to really take advantage of the spinning feature. I work outdoors and my hand are rough, REALLY ROUGH, especially in winter. If I touch the thread its over. Having to use a tool and only being able to half hitch at the eye limited the vises usefulness for me. I also feel like the methods used sacrifice precision for speed. I want my flies to look as good as Im capable of making them and I feel like I can better achieve that by carefully placing my wraps rather than spinning the hook. That may very well be in my head only and the fish sure don't care but tying isn't just about filling boxes for me. I like the tradition behind the patterns we tie and the methods that go along with them. Norm was very gracious and I hated returning the vise. I hope that down the road as my tying improves and I become a more proficient tier I can work the Nor-vise back into the fold but for now its just not me.
  9. If your trying to learn this thing simply by doing and not with the aid of books and SBS instructions or videos you've a braver man than me. Try charliesflybox.com and find his tutorials for the adams and follow each stop precisely. Take your time with each step and make sure one is perfect before moving to the next. If you didn't shave the hook 20X before you got to the last step you did it wrong. Razor blades are you best friend. …oh, and don't try to wrap both hackles together just yet. Save that for later…trust me.
  10. That vice is sick…..all your vices are. Nice work. (Ive watched the videos many, many times over)
  11. I think the V shape is desirable on a wolley bugger. It gives em a nice tapered look but I doubt the fish care. Ive seen plenty tied either way and I like em both. Some of the nicest ones Ive seen where done with just dry fly hackle on a thread body wound with touching turns. Ive been looking for a video I think TC trout did where he talked about some really good schlappen he found for buggers. Ive recently compared schlappen vs woolley bugger hackle on a couple different streamers and its schlappen for me from now on.
  12. utyer, thanks for that post. Stories like that go a long way. I can think of only one other company that I can share a similar customer service story about, Swarovski optic. I will sing that companies praises till the day I die. You made me really want to support Mr Norlander now (more) and I'm gonna give some serious thought to settling down with this vice and making it work for me. I do have a question for you. An ideally tapered or thin or thick or loose or tight dubbing noodle to create the desired body shape is something I'm just getting good at. When your spinning dubbing onto the thread how much control do you have over how its dispersed? Whatcing Norm it didn't seem like he could get a perfect noodle spinning it on.
  13. I'm a fly tying video junkie and have seen Norms videos many times over. Ive been eying this thing for awhile. My main hang up is the in-line jaws. I knew they'd feel awkward but not as restrictive as they do. You don't appreciate having access to the rear of the hook until its not there. The midge jaws would be an option but then the spinning feature is somewhat compromised. Bottom line, at $450 I need to love this thing and I don't. I will take the advice given and sit on her for awhile longer before I throw in the towel but my mind is pretty much made up.
  14. I think Im unbuying it tomorrow. It's a really really cool vise and does some amazing things but I just don't think I'm a Nor-Vise guy. I think I rather continue learning the old school methods for getting from A to B instead of starting all over and loosing the techniques I'm only just getting good at. If I had 30 years of tying under my belt I'd probably add this to the arsenal, but being only 1 year in I think I need to get a lot better before I start looking to reinvent how thread gets put on a hook…. Norm sure was one helluva nice guy though, Im really gonna hate bringing this back.
  15. Just noticed my "Crackaig" is being autocorrected to "cracking"
  16. I'll second the SOS. The thing just flat kills. I tie olives and blacks but never a blue, I'll have to give that a try.
  17. Great looking fly. She'll catch for ya. I wouldn't worry about that post getting fouled. Mine where much longer and thinner and I don't think Ill have a problem.
  18. I didn't have two vices either. I clamped one end of the post in my vice and the other end in my forceps and tied them off to a nearby chair.
  19. i like red floss. Its not too loud and the fish go nuts for it, the more they chew it the better it looks.
