  1. I find the hobby both relaxing and fulfilling. Welcome and enjoy.
  2. Sorry for your loss. I too am a pet owner and know that a loss of pet is hard taken. Took me years to adopt another and yes I know I will outlive the new pet but for now I spoil and am loved. Good luck my friend.
  3. Nice Adams mod. Size 12 is great bass salmon steelhead sizes. I have bass in jersey none of others but tie I will. Definite floater no need for frogs butt
  4. Went to Orvis in Marlton NJ today only spent 55.00 on materials but when I came in they knew me. Also asked About the rod and if I liked it or not. I am thrilled with it as well as with the guarentee/warranty. Never hounded nor do they pressure sales to me or any I saw in store. That means a lot but if you have a question they are there and are knowledgeable in Marlton. Can't say all stores are the same but happy with mine and the products.
  5. I have most of my most used and best tools in it. Now they are protected better than my materials and organized. Should have done it long ago.
  6. Flytire. I did your silver nymph as posted and used gold on one silver on another. Furnace hackle on gold looked far better to my eye brown on silver. Both glitter in sun great which I think will grab the goal of one on hook one in hand. Thanks for the pic
  7. This morning's early AM pre work fly tie to test my inflamed wrist. Ant with legs and antenna on #18 2XL hook.
  8. Nice silver nymph Flytire. Will try that next time I get a chance. Size hook? I do most #16 #18 for most my flies.
  9. Use black yarn cut to 2 inch pcs add a few granules dessicant into a coffee bean grinder. Instant dubbing for dry flies black color.
  10. Try some of these the ants gets hits on most all still for me. Simple low material. 2x hook size #16 and smaller. Spectrablend dry fly black dubbing and silly legs from bungee cord.
  11. Nice collection of foam poppers and great find on the rod.
  12. Ants are still hot action for me. An ant with rubber legs instead of wings on #16.
  13. 3 scissors 2 whip finishers 3 in 1 dubbing loop tool with both attachments Bodkin 2 hackle pliers with room for more but important was scissor protection. All 3 has separate storage
  14. Tough leather 10 slot tool pouch. All materials was from Micheals and took about an hour. Will outlast the tools I am sure of. Still work in progress but all my main tools short of bobbins is safely stored and accessible.
  15. Congrats on reaching the goal of retirement financial security. Had I got become addicted to fly tie and fish some years back I think I would have stayed retired. Now with my own business and loyal repeat customer base I work for enjoyment. As for gear I do agree that most less expensive gear is more than adequate and ultimately it is the user and not the gear that makes the difference in good or bad fisher.
  16. I response to poopdock. If you try to use substandard cheap tools to achieve high quality wood work it will show but you can adapt and produce marginal woodwork. I stand by the saying. You get what you pay for. Most times it's the name but sometimes it's the quality. Anybody can adapt and be successful on a budget income to fly fish but if you can afford it why not go with gear that further enhances your experiences. My starter was budget mind in case I didn't get into fly fishing. Now I'm obsessive and always looking for better. You never need to spend a fortune to enjoy. Natural materials is available to tie. Many cheap options for a vise that's not a vise. Regular thread can work. A cheap rod reel combo can produce. But if you truly get addicted nothing but best will do.
  17. Haven't touched my pro bass baitcaster nor bought live bait since. Shane as it cast farther than most open faced but I catch more and when it's pouring rain I tie. It's meditative and yet addictive if it gets u.
  18. I have fished the superfine carbon in creeks lakes and a river now. Both limited cast and open and it has done outstanding for me. I roll cast maybe 70 percent but when open I shoot 50 ft np with feather light lay. The choice to upgrade was well worth it and have yet to be camp grounded due to weather that my previous setup would have done to me. Bottom line is you get what you pay for. Works in all aspects. Relationships flourish when nourished wood work is better with high grade tools not home owner black and Decker and so on.
  19. I tried all top brands. Winds at 5 gust to 10. Superfine felt far better and more delicate. Went to lake winds 10 gust to 15. Cast was like still air spot on acct and farther than my best cast previous. Registered today via call and they had all info instant. Great service and support in my opinion.
  20. Nice looking bird. I usually do purchases but nature also donates back when I go to get my line wet. Last was some mallard hen breast feathers. Not many but great colors in it.
  21. Just left Orvise before I saw this. I have all but that size of hooks so I think I will do some that's smaller. Looks great. Well done on video and tie.
  22. 490.00 spent. Superfine carbon cast like a dream and it was done into wind that would have me heading to the tavern on my starter rod. Also picked up 2 @ 50 packs hooks 2 packs dubbing and 1 pack shellback. Now to get home to mount my reel tie a few scuds and get the line wet at my favorite lake. Thanks for the responses
  23. Books are pretty much outdated in this age. Most use YouTube instruction and if new use hook sizes too big to get the feel and progress to smaller. I own books for the sake of patterns times and fish but learning is from seeing and doing.
