So, prior to seeing the Blue Earth feature of the GT's slamming birds from the sky, and the recent viral post of the guy who carved up a flip-flop into a floating bird sandwich and had a GT hammer it (google it), I have seen firsthand giant snook take down cormorants in Central America. We actually recovered a full grown bird from a 40 lb snook (see photo) that we caught in 2017. My crew and I have another trip down to the undiscovered countries in a few months, and wanted to see if I could come up with something that looked like a bird and was actually able to be cast with a fly rod with some degree of efficiency. This monstrosity shown in the few photos is what I came up with. Its a foam body, double Gamakatsu tarpon hooks (3/0 up front, 2/0 in back) with 100-lb mono connection, some left over hackle feathers stripped down for the feet, and some maribou/black EP fibers for the vertical body profile. YES - its tough to cast. I can flog it out about 60 feet with my best double haul. it floats and strips with a nice surface water ripple. I tried it out on my local river in high winds. It will be tough, no doubt, but what the heck... I used hot glue to connect the different foam pieces, and tried to give some dimension to the head, even embedding some eyes. Yes, its about as ugly as I could conjure up on a whim. I will probably try to refine the design a bit. I am calling it Snook Bird Candy for the time being. I have no idea how its going to hold up. If anyone has similar types of bigger bird patterns (this fly is 8 inches long overall, foam section tip to tail is 6 inches), please share. The snook that we target average 30 lbs, with the 40-lb and 50-lb fish showing up a few times a day. I welcome any constructive ideas and heckling. Scaled Sardine (Harengula Jaguana) Materials list: Hook: Owner SSW 2/0 (Model# 5315-121) Tail: Two Schlappen shiny side out Mid-Flash: Pearl Web Hot White from FTD approx 8 strands Head Form: E-Z Body Tubing Pearl- size large 3/8 Belly: White acrylic yarn Lateral Wing: Aunt Lydia's yarn or white Antron added to each side for sparkle Back: Green acrylic yarn Eyes: 3D-7mm Attach 2 pieces of white acrylic yarn. A short hank to bottom a long hank on top. Add flash. Brush everything back with a toothbrush. Attach E-Z Body Tubing and glue. Fold back E-Z Body Tubing and attach 1/4" from eye. Whip finish, trim excess, and glue. Attach Antron Lateral wing. Tie in white acrylic to belly. Brush everything back. Tie in green acrylic yarn to back, and brush everything back. Tie off,whip finish, and remove thread. Shape eyes around the tapered front end of a pencil and attach them to the fly with a CA type gel adhesive. Fill in between the eyes both top and bottom with UV adhesive and your done. Fabric Store Substitutes/Finds E-Z Body Tubing: Substitute Pearl Darice Mesh. Guys and girls. Interested in hearing your thoughts on fly choice for those days when none of the usual tricks don't work. Don't get me wrong i had a reasonable day on the water, but it could have been better. Was fishing for barramundi.....

What do you think about this fly for snook either on the dock lights at night or maybe even the beach?

HI All , I am new to the Forum and looking for a bit of help , having a Family holiday to , Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island on Florida Gulf Coast in first week or two of AUGUST this year and plan to get a while to get in a bit of SALTWATER fly fishing ! have not done any Saltwater Fly before :-( I believe the fish in the area are awesome with everything from sea trout, snook to Tarpon (farther out by boat), I was wondering if anyone can give me some guidance on BEST FLIES TO USE & ALSO a few locations to try a bit of flats fishing or wading with a 9Wt fly rod, on or around Anna Maria , it extends down to Long Boat Quay to south and Tampa bay to North ? Anyone been and make recommendations would be GREAT ! :-)
