Outdoor Life Flies

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just got the new Outdoor Life and on page 143 they have an article called The Dirty Dozen. It has 12 flies that they say will get the job done. Here they are:

1)Royal Wulff

2)Conehead Muddler- Yellow Marabou Version Pictured

3)Light Cahill

4)Tan Elk hair Caddis- CDC Legs on Pictured Fly

5)Yellow Humpy

6)Black Foam Ant

7)Bead-Head Soft Hackle Hare's Ear

8)Conehead Woolly Bugger

9)Parachute Adams

10)Yellow Stimulator

11)Weighted Black Stonefly Nymph- Double Gold Bead Thorax Pictured

12)Bead-Head Pheasant Tail Nymph

I wanted to get some thoughts on what should should be added and what should be taken off. I think the list is Okay. I would put on a Beadhead Wooly Bugger and a Deer Head Hopper instead of the Stimulator. Let the debating begin.

I would replace the ant with blue winged olive and the rest looks ok to me.

Blueman89-

I would be reluctant to drop the Stimulator. On one stream in Massachussets, I caught a 14 in. rainbow fishing the Stimulator as a dry. Two casts later, in the same run, I was stripping the same Stimulator upstream and nailed a smallmouth.

A very versatile fly: it can imitate caddis, stoneflies, hoppers, and baitfish- vary the size and color! Also they make great strike indicators!

FWIW!

Best from Nashville-

I'd add a crackleback - love multi-use flies

I'd replace the conehead muddler with a regular muddler - since I could then use it as a dry grasshopper imitation.

can't drop the ant. It's too valuable, as well as the stimmy. Drop the wulff and add a green weenie caddis pupa.

I guess this would vary alot depending on where your home water is. For me here in scandinavia I would probably switch more two thirds of those flies for the likes of Klinkhammer, Streaking caddie, Eurpea no12, caddies larva etc.

For me who fishes in sweden, read alot of british flyfishing magazines and american forums it's clear that although we all are all fishing for the same fishes (who behaves very simillar regardless of where you fish it) the style of flies vary ALOT from country to country!

Of course there are variations in the amount and type of food for the fish which affects the flies chosen, but still the variations isn't so big so it justifies the big difference in which flies are popular in each country. I think it's mainly a fashion thing! biggrin.gif

I learn alot by taking influences from flies and fly tiers from other countries which I can incorporate into my flies and tying technique.

Well, first of all these are mostly trout flies. While trout are fun, I occassionally like to fish for big, mean animals like smallmouth bass, rather that focussing all my fishing time on "fancy bait" Mooning-Smilie.gif That said, I'd suggest that a universal fly selection would have a very different look. Here is what I consider to be the dirty dozen one should always carry in assorted sizes:

1)Clouser Deep Minnow, chartreuse over white

2)Traditional tie Muddler Minnow

3)Adams dry fly

4)Tan Elk hair Caddis

5)bead head wooly bugger - peacock herl body, olive marabou tail, grizzly hackle

6)Foxee Red Clouser

7)Gray Ghost streamer

8)Tap's Bug - yellow and red

9)Marabou Muddler - white w/ conehead

10)Sawyer style Pheasant Tail

11)Partidge and Orange soft hackle

12)San Juan worm

YMMV

Any list like this is highly subjective and therefore subject to arguement.

Why don't I see any pike or striper flies listed? wink.gif

True! I would't fish any of these for Pike, I saw the list as mainly a trout list. Altough I've caught Pike on montana size 10 it's a tad bit small when fishing for angry pike at +10 lbs biggrin.gif

The actual article is basd on Trout flies that you shouldn't be without.

Sadly, that info could have helped us all if it had been included in your first post.
