FTF Fly Challenge: Wooly Buggers

Recommended Posts

I call this the Ugly Damsel but it is a woolly bugger varient.

• Hook: Size 4-8, straight wet fly or nymph hook. A normal to short shank hook is required for the fly to “work” correctly.

• Thread: Olive, Chartreuse, Tan, Beige or other fairly neutral color

• Tail: Olive marabou. (can be tied with other colors – black and brown being good additional options)

• Body: Dubbing or fuzzy yarn that matches tail color.

• Rib: Green, chartreuse or red wire.

• Hackle: Olive/olive grizzly saddle hackle (or hackle to “match” body/tail)

• Eyes: Red or yellow dumb bell eyes – weight to match conditions/fly size.

• Legs: Centipede legs or other “rubber” legs. Barred Olive or yellow work best on the olive bodied fly, but I have used other colors. Generally starting with color close to the body of the fly is a good start, but don’t be afraid to try other colors.

Hi All,

I tied this up after having some good luck with a balanced leech. It works really well in the weeds for rainbows.

Hook: size 10-12 mustad R50

Tail: grizzly marabou with 6-8pcs of flash

Body: Med olive chenille

Rib: wooly bugger feather with gold wire

Bead: Gold

ok, second post and my first fly (actually third one ever!). I didn't have seal fur but it is a variation on this pattern:

Green Seal Bugger

Hook: Mustad R74 Size 8

Thread: 8/0 Olive

Weight: 0.015 Lead

Tail: Black Marabou

Rib: Medium Copper Wire

Body: Green Seal Dubbing

Hackle: Burnt Orange Grizzly

I used a #6 Streamer hook and Green Olive Dubbing, two strips of crystal flash added as well. I have problems finding Hackle (like everyone) so it was just a ginger strung neck hackle.

Does it have two hooks? because it looks there is a hook eye in the middle.

No. Like a Balanced Leech pattern, you tie in a pin "borrowed" from the wife quilting supplies.

Hello everyone,

I made this fly up last year for a couple of buddies looking for something different to use on the Niagara River while steelheading. I called it 'Nuclear Bugger'.

Use whatever size hook you prefer for a normal bugger.

Body is charteuse chenille

Hackle: blach genetic

Tail: Marabou
