Stefan 1967 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2010 Hello all, I tried to tie the "spring olives" by Russ Furney but failed generating the brush :wallbash: You can find the instruction there : http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2...11.2010%2017:09 I don´t understand step 6. I know how to prepare the paraloop and to tie in the osrtich herl but my English is to weak to understand the details of the instruction and not all words are available in a dictionary :-( Maybe one of you can explain the step to me. Thanks in advance ! Bye Stefan

Mr. Vegas 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2010 watch these videos.. It is pretty much the same concept. I am looking for a better one for you still since the quality is not that great also I bet dryflypurist can answer this best
Mr. Vegas 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2010 wrap the herl up the thread then back down 5 or 6 wraps tie off and trim exactly! The way they explained it in the article even confused me lol.... But that isn't too hard
Stefan 1967 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2010 Thx ! That means the brush is made by wrapping the herl around the thread (like a post) up und down ? It´s what I do tying e.g. a parachute ant ! I will give it a try tonight and post a photo of the result if it was successful. Bye from Germany Stefan
Stefan 1967 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2010 Hi, Gave it a try tonight but I´m still not satisfied with the result. The brush is really a challenge to me ! Maybe I still use the wrong technic. Advices are still welcome :-) I have to tie and to tie and to tie until the fly is like the original. Keep you informed. Bye Stefan
Mr. Vegas 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 don't worry about it.. I am the same way.. I wont stop till I am happy
trez 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 The only thing else I noticed in the article is that the herl is stripped some and the bare stem is wrapped up the post and then the unstripped herl is wrapped down. This would prevent smashing down the fluff that would have been there if you used an unstripped section to go up the post and then down again. In the picture it also looks like he may have stripped the herl fluff off of one side entirely, which would also decrease the chance of smashing down what you wrap. It was in the article but wasn't emphasized. Hope this helps!

flytire 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2010 you could try tying in 2 ostrich herls and a simple dubbing loop. wrap the herls around one leg of the loop and twist it all together into a brush and simply pull it forward as a wing case. thats all thats being done anyway. Stefan 1967 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Hi guys, I gave it another try today and I´m satisfied with the fly now. Stefan 1967 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2011 Hi, I found an other solution, working fine with me. I tie a piece of (thicker, olive) yarn in instead of the loop made of the tying thread and wrap the herl around it. 8-10 times up and 5-8 times down. That makes it more stiff and comfortable. And my results are fine now. Bye Stefan
