Gray Squirrel Nymph

Recommended Posts

Trying some photography, plus a nymph using native gray squirrel fur. It looks like a hare's ear nymph, but it's more bronze in color, and the fur is spikier.

Hope this works...first time I've tried posting a picture.

Thread: tan nylon

Hook: 12 nymph

Tail: gray squirrel tail, from center of the tail

body: gray squirrel, split-thread dubbed

rib: gold wire

Thorax: gray squirrel

Wingcase: pheasant tail

They're gray at a distance, but the fur is mostly bronze tipped, gray figuring into it. Up close, they've got a lot of various color to them. The tail is gray, but the central fur is brown, black, and bronze (and yes, gray.)

I think the coloring has allot to do with the part of the country it comes from. I found that squirrel pelts tend to greatly vary from different regions of the country. But in any case it's a great looking nymph pattern, nicely done.

My apologizies. It IS redder than it should be. Try this one, shot in natural light.

Good looking nymph, the red looked good to. Tie it with fox squirrel also!

What's old is new again.. I saw that fly tied in Arkansas in 1984...

It worked then and I'm sure that it'll still work.
