Preparing and selecting hackle feathers for streamers

Recommended Posts

This video is part of a series. Please don't tell me that I should have talked about the difference between dry fly hackle, or hackle quality, or how to buy a cape, or anything like that. This video is for a specific purpose. I have a flies that I use this specific technique for. Instead of showing it in the entire video, I can just link to this one. This allows me to offer more info, or less info. You can select another video if you want more information. Or you can watch a simple 4 minute video without having to watch the extra steps, if you already know how.

While there is much more to know about hackle, I am focusing on the simple stuff, with selecting hackle feathers off of a cape for use in a streamer tails, wings and as lateral lines. Its very important to prepare the hackle properly, and select the right feathers in order to get them to sit right on the fly, and even get the correct action.

Thanks - I've never seen a video that covers picking streamer feathers. It helps to see the selection from opposite sides of the cape and how to pair the feathers.

Im glad you like it. More hackle selection and prep videos are coming. This is just for one specific type of hackle use. For tying a Matuka fly, Deciever's, and any other streamer pattern that uses whole feathers for hackle. This is not for selecting dry fly hackle, or collar hackle, or anything like that.

I will post them up as I upload them.

Personally, I find technique videos pointless. Presentation would be much more powerful if involving an actually pattern.

The OP clearly stated that this only covered a technique. You don't have to waste your time on this pointless video.

This one video shows a technique that can be applied to many feather streamers. The internet is full of videos that show how to tie specific patterns. I love to see the details of material prep technique, which are often off-camera and missing from the pattern videos. See links below for two good pattern videos that completely ignore hackle selection and all feather prep is off camera. If someone needs this missing information, it can now be googled and solved.

Another nice video McFly. I like quick video tips.

Glad you like it. Thanks!

I have a fly that I will be making a video of soon. Its an involved fly, so I though I would make small clips of this kinda thing. This way someone could decide to watch the clip of how to select a hackle if they want that info, otherwise they can continue watching the fly tying video and see how the fly is made in a much shorter time (under 6 minutes).

I get why people don't add this info in the video. In fact I didnt used to until recently. Its difficult to do, and adds more time to the video. Everyone that makes videos wants to keep their video's short. This is why I made this video, so I could just link to it if someone wants to see more about feather selection.

As I said in the description, this will be part of an actual demonstration. :) The fly is very involved. and will take a while to tie on camera. I want to keep my fly videos under 6 minutes. So in order to do that, I have to make a few of these simple technique video's and link to them from the video. This will allow people to watch a short video if they already know the technique, or a few extra short clips on how to do the technique. This way I don't make a 10+ minute tying video. Make sense? I thought I described that already...

I've never done that. If you have the video playing on YouTube, and copy the address in the search bar across the top ...

... it shows on here, even with the "s" on there.
